Driving up to Exeter tonight, I really noticed how poor the main beam (not full beam) is on my w202. It was quite a struggle to see very far in front of me at all and had to follow another car to help me see bends in the road!

So, any suggestions to either a bulb upgrade or whole headlamp unit and bulb upgrade? :)

Thanks.

You could start with a bulb upgrade. PIAAs are good. I went for Platinum Whites for my sides so they match the main beam which is xenon.

Hi,

I did this for my Range Rover a while back and it made a huge difference to them. I bought the IceWhite bulbs from somewhere like "HalfWits", Not very expensive and worked a treat.

I upgraded mine from Powerbulbs; a pair of Philips Vision Plus (H7). Big difference.

You could also replace the indicator bulbs so that they appear silver instead of orange (apart from when flashing ;) ); Philips Silver Vision. Think yours is the same fitting as mine, PY21W .... and then replace the sidelights to be whiter with Blue Vision (H6W).

Once you start....

Best bet would be to change to the later type facelift headlamps.
The headlamps on my first c class (1995) were crap compared to the ones on my current car (1998).
I went down the bulb change route with the earlier car, it improved things a bit. They still weren’t as good as the later facelift headlamps fitted with standard bulbs.

Have you checked your headlamp aim? It's no good if the lights are trying to burn a hole in the tarmac. Both the Audi and the DC5 arrived with lights pointing at the floor.

Thanks everyone, I shall have a good read through everything you've posted and links etc, I was quite surprised how poor they were, almost dangerous!

Or a set of Osram Silverstars ....

I changed my bulbs to these , and the difference was incredible ...

Honestly, i'm not connected to Osram in any way , bu they really are good and for twenty notes, you can't complain ....

Yes I fitted Silverstars to my R129, strongly suggest you try these (or equivalent from other bulb manufacturers first) as it's such a quick and cheap upgrade.

Gina, the Xenon upgrade is the best ( ive done it!)but your looking at around £500 mark, for a quick cheap upgrade defo go for the bulb option, any of the above really! :)

£500 is a bit steep! I think a bulb upgrade for about £20 sounds about right! Cheers guys, will let you know how I get on, just spent near £120 on my key today!

Alps and I have retrofitted factory W202 HID lamps. The kit I bought from Bosch was about £600 and included headlamp housings, bulbs, control units etc.

Here's the old thread for the Autoexpress test, it's very illuminating.

Only the +30% linky seems to work though. But that is what you need so not too bad.

Halfrauds come out best by a mile.
