Hi Guys,

I'm after some of your knowledge and experience on this matter.

Yesterday my cousin bought a W210 E320 Cdi for his Dad he will be presenting the car to him on Sunday at his birthday party. everything is perfect on the car except for a problem that i found today, on a test drive i tried doing a kickdown and it just would not go, nor does it rev over 3000 rpm in any gear (tried via Tip) gear changes are smooth it changes both up and down fine. I also noticed the engine temperature takes a while to get to just below 80c is this normal on my CE temp gets to running temp (85c) in under 10 mins.

I assuming its a possible MAF issue or the CAT is gone.

Some background info on the car, it was stood stationary at the guys showroom from before christmas never driven until my cousin test drove it and collected it (yesterday). Also when he first put the key in he got a message saying that battery was low in the car but after his trip home (40 miles) the message no longer appears.

Guys any help or advice you can give will be much appreciated.

The car is going on STAR this saturday.

bump..

STAR will probably show if it is a MAF problem. Is the idle lumpy? If so, it certainly does sound like a possible MAF problem. Does it change through all the gears or just 1st and 2nd? If the latter, that sounds like 'Limp Home' mode if not, still points to MAF!
I also believe that the kickdown switch can be a problem on these too??

Guys thanks for the feedback.

The car idles really well not lumpy at all. It will Rev freely to the limiter in N however will only rev to 3000rpm in Tip mode. There are no warning signs on the dash. ironically the dash displays "No Malfunction" I suspect the Kick down switch could be faulty i will get a volt meter on it tomorrow. The car changes through all gears just as you'd expect (changes gear at 2000rpm in D)

Guys again thank you so much for the feedback

Guys took the car for a long drive through town lwt it come upto temperature around 85c and the kickdown started working and the car was very quick however when i got to the bypass and started going over 40mph the temp dropped and along with it the kick down also got the engine management light on now. didnt get a chance to get the codes read using star but will do this on saturday. is there any limiter stopping engine revving more than 3000rpm before engine reaches temperature (similar to the e49 M5)???

Nope.

It sounds like the MAF could be causing under-fueling so running cool as well as dropping the turbo.

If the temperature is taking time to come up to operating temperature an dropping when the car is in forward motion could also be that the thermostat is stuck open.

Had exactly the same symptoms on a 320 we retailed recently and was the MAF unit. £130 from euro car parts and it was happy days.
