Power steering fluid

I’ve come to the conclusion that it is correct for this fact. After looking at the approval list on 236.3 for example Panolin ATF Multi is listed. When I go on their website for the specs on that produc it says ATF for the GM Dexron II D specification.
Applications: automatic transmissions and servo steering in automobiles.
Performance grade: Mercedes-Benz 236.1 und 236.6

So even on their site it doesn’t state 236.3 yet on the 236.3 index sheet it’s listed.

The fluid I used is for 236.6 so I’m guessing it’s actually right and Mercedes are just being too confusing here.

wow you have become an expert over the space of a few posts - who needs the halfords chap now! lol joking

I have a w204 but i dont think I have the manual, Im not near my paperwork or I would check. Good for me to know too ..

Ok I research in a different way so this is what Ive found
A001 989 24 03/13 part number for the bottle of PSF

Genuine Mercedes-Benz Power Steering Fluid - 1 Litre Bottle A001989240313 NEW | eBay

link to advert which says its for our model w204

I also remember something about the colour of the fluid being important... never mind anyway the part no search should show more detail on the fluid spec and hopefully you can compare to what you bought (try find tha on halfords website)

Haha far from an expert, I’m just trying to put the pieces to the puzzle together as Mercedes are adamant on 236.3 yet they are approving a product that is to the 236.6 specification for power steering which is an automatic transmission fluid for Dextron II which is the same as the bottle I bought, it also meets other approvals for other manufacturers which are the same as I used also.

As for the colour... well... I had nothing to go on lol

You may be over thinking this. Let’s try and keep it simple (it should be) ;^)

1). The Power Steering Reservoir is part of a “sealed” system. This ensures that it always retains fluid. Any loss of fluid indicates a leak. Where else can the fluid go? Nowhere its sealed in the system, it can only get out via a leak or you draining it.

2). Any leak will exhibit itself in two ways:

* Low fluid in the reservoir
* Whining/Groaning noise from the actual steering.

Work the steering wheel from lock to lock. Any whine/groan as you do this, would indicate low fluid.

You have witnessed both 1) & 2) together. So, you have a leak, regardless of whether you can see it, heat it, smell it or taste it. It is escaping, getting out.

Call the vendor and tell him:

1). You had no fluid in the reservoir.

2). This was/is accompanied by a loud whine when you turn the steering wheel.

3). Putting fluid into the system corrects the whine.

So you know you have a leak. Please can they take a look and fix it under your warranty that came with the car that they have to put right.

Do not get into any debate about the complexities of which specs etc.

You have a leak
Putting in fluid that meets the MB spec on the bottle stops it (proving the leak)

The missing fluid could be anywhere and always visible. It’s probably lying on your under-tray.

I called the dealer and i'm left feeling undervalued a little, so i called them and they said oh dear well you have Guard X protection policy on your car, just give them a call and they will get you booked in at any garage local to you and they will ask for details on the issue and will cover it. I called the warrenty provider and they said i have to book in with any garage get them to look at it and get back us with what they have said and we will decide if its covered or not if not i have to pay the bill for any diagnostics done! Now sorry but ive only had the car 4 days why am i having to to deal with this crap, shouldnt the dealer be doing this on my behalf? I also have a range rover and when that has had issues in the past i called the dealer they booked it in and got the work done and covered under the warrenty every time i had to make no phone calls they dealt with it all i got it back when fixed, they even picked the car up and dropped it back off at work, this dealer is rubbish compared and the crazy thing about it its the same dealer just a different location.

Ive called their other dealership much closer and explained it to them, to which they were shocked and they have agreed to take on the work and sort it all out for me.
I'll be complaining about the sales bloke who sold me the car because he has zero customer satisfaction after four days

Ignore the warranty. It was in almost certainly in an unfit state when sold, the selling garage are obliged to fix it regardless of any after market warranty.

Make this very clear and very simple to them.

I've literally just got off the phone to the service manager at the dealership who i bought the car from as i called the dealership local to me and they got in contact with them to sort and explained the situation and that during the mechanical prep the fluid level clearly wasnt checked otherwise they would have realised there is an issue. She said the same thing as yourself that its actually down to them to sort and the response i got from the sales bloke was wrong in handling it that way. They are now organising for someone to pick the car up and get it back to them to sort as its a safety issue. They will also be providing a courtesy car.

Car collected, courtesy car dropped off. Before he arrived i thought i will check the fluid level to get an indication on how bad the leak was, put it this way i didnt have to, i looked under the car, fluid on the floor and all over the under tray. Definitely have a leak!

There you go... leak it is.

I hope they clean it up well... messy stuff. As the system is under pressure it will spray the fluid around the surrounding components.

I would just like to say a big thank you to everyone who has replied to this thread, I never expected the amount of help I got, it’s my first MB and I’ve already learnt so much about the car I own thanks to you all.
