Prince RIP

Yep, I grew up with Prince (not literally, though).

Is it me or are they dropping like flies?

Bl00dy hell.

Its getting to the point where I'm scared to go online!!!

One after another lately.

Yes, great talent. Great performer and wrote great tunes for many artists.

RIP little fella.

Yup, real shock this one.

Also grew up to Prince's music in the 80's and 90's - some great tunes.

Still listen to his stuff now and will continue to do so...

Sad loss.

Jesus, I wondered why they were playing Prince non stop on 1xtra when I tuned in briefly going home. Such a shame, as Ant says they're all dropping like flies

A bit after my time, and not exactly my taste in music, though if there's any doubting the talent, the clip below should clarify how good he was.

Superb talent. Probably the most talented of all bar Michael Jackson.

There is nothing but crap music and crap talent out there today.

Not a massive fan of his music but (as a guitarist of 45 years) I take my hat off to his talent.

He created a sound that was uniquely his and was able to play more instruments than most people can ever dream of.

I'm sure as a musician the last thing he'd want to do would be to 'Rest in Peace', so I'll simply say, I hope he's shredding somewhere better....

Mark :)

I'm not sure if I remember this correctly from a documentary a year or so ago, Prince recorded song after song relentlessly. One recording he made (according to the sound engineer or some such) was achingly beautiful and probably the best song ever to to be constructed.

I'm not sure if it was too much emotionally but Prince demanded that the recording was to be deleted immediately. The canny sound engineer backed it up before deleting it, as knew it was probably the most important song ever written and that hopefully, one day Prince would rediscover it and allow its release.

Next day the engineer turned up for work, in order to start laying down more new tracks only to find that his sneaky backup had been discovered and deleted overnight.

Maybe 99% drivel/made up - but possibly an insight into the output and talent of Prince..

A friend of mine said that apparently he has written so many songs that they are going to release an album once a year for the next 100 years, wow!

I certainly grew up listening to him and personally think he was the greatest ever! ;)

He wrote, produced and did the arrangements as well as playing the guitar and piano almost as good as the very, very best. Not as commercially successful as Mr Jackson but more talented than anyone else IMHO!

Party on sir RIP :thumb:

I'm certainly going to miss his Salmon and Corned Beef products;)

Just got a load of Corned beef for some butties .......cost £25.......But we can still party like it was £19 99:ban:

RIP Prince. "When Doves Cry" was one of my all time favourites. A very young age to be passing on.

I was only thinking about this the other day.

If you think back to all the great artists from 50s > say 90s (for me) - compare that to now and you have hardly anything (I can't name anyone in the same calibre as some of the greatest artists of all time).

I wonder if that really is the golden age of music never to be repeated...

I agree John. I think it's just the way of the world. The music industry is so flooded with fame hunters. This in turn surely dilutes any quality.

Maybe we can say the same about many things. Look at the 100's of TV channels available nowadays? 95% of them are pumping rubbish out.

Car manufacturers? Many members here saying MB of old were much better quality than the currant cars. Again, mass production dilutes quality?

I'm not complaining, just a thought.

Ant.

I am 51 and it does make you wonder!

I suspect that the world has moved and not necessarily in a good way. Young musicians and their industry appear to be much more concerned with making money and achieving celebrity as opposed to saying something new or changing the world! :(

Yes, it does seem to be more focus on becoming famous rather than actually producing decent music.

Before it seemed like the music was first and then becoming famous was as a result.

I'm conscious it could be getting older and complaining about stuff your parents used to complain about - but I've heard from a few younger people (say those in their late teens / 20s) saying they wish they were born earlier to hear all the good music first time around.

I take the point about car quality being diluted.

My take on this is that manufacturers have all had to fall in to line to be competitive.

Having learnt the price of a new 190e back in the day on here being approximately double a modern C class but in money terms today, it appears they have all had to reduce costs, reduce the price of the final products and up the scale with some sharing of some base components and introducing multiple models, using shared platforms and engines.

I guess a modern Merc is more "throw away" and less like the vastly superior quality automobiles back in the day.

Is this a better or worse thing...
