I had a CLA with privacy glass, it was very dark. I now have a CLS 400, also with privacy glass, but somehow it does not seem as dark - you cansee straight through to the other side! It is dark, but not as dark as the CLA, anyone know if anything has changed re. the tint spec of the privacy glass?

Bigger car, lighter interior, giving impression of a lighter tint?

This latest E63 (2014) has privacy glass and it's lighter and much more see through than the previous E63 with privacy glass (2010).

Summat's changed at MB I think.

Perhaps MB realise that not everyone wants a car that looks like it belongs to a drug dealer.

I try and avoid buying cars with blacked out windows, as it's more like to attract attention from the Police.

I have no objection to privacy glass all round- seems quite sensible in very hot countries for example to cut down solar radiation--- and at least the car then appears to be "all of a piece " . What appears as an utterly half-hearted afterthought is this privacy glass from the B pillar back nonsense - what's that about. :fail

I have my everyday driver blacked out from the b-pillar, as Whitenemesis says, you can't have limo black on the front side windows (max 27% tint IIRC) and having the back tinted means a) my dogs don't get so hot in the car and b) if I am shooting then no one can see my gun/ quarry lying in the load space.

I appreciate this is legal requirement in the UK but can't understand the desire to black out the rear half of the car under these circumstances. People are free of course to chose what they like and may have valid reasons to, but quite often privacy glass comes as a standard fitment on higher trim levels from many manufacturers rather than as an option meaning the "half baked look" has become "de rigueur" :(

I will add, yes, the fronts are illegal and I carry a razor blade for the day I'm stopped and asked to remove them. I haven't done it yet because I'm not keen on the clear front dark rear look.
No, I didn't fit them, they came as purchased with the car.
My last MOT, the car passed with an advisory that the front tints appear too dark.
I await incoming hate mail:D

I had the same look on my 300zx a few years back, but you didn't get so much grief then. I think it would be a bit of a Jobsworth who would ask you to remove them by the roadside (and if that much of a JW he would probably nick you for the razor blade too) more likely to get a correction ticket.

Curiously enough they had the same issue with dark visors on bikes, with a lot of people claiming it was an insurance issue, to the point that the insurance companies came out and said it would only affect your insurance if it could be proven that the dark visor caused or contributed to the accident. Had one cop tell a mate to remove his dark visor at the roadside which caused a discussion as to whether it was safer to ride a bike on a sunny day with a dark visor, or no visor at all. He didn't help himself when he suggested my mate go and buy a pair of sunglasses to ride home with!

I got the rears tinted (after market) to reduce the amount of sunlight/ heat on hot days...keeping the dogs cooler.

Hmm, I've had MB factory privacy glass on my last 3 E Class estates - it obscures what you may be carrying when the seats are down.

I've never had a tug from the police, even when I'm watching a movie via my video in motion mod.

And da hoes dig it too innit :thumb:.

Would the police giving you some attention be an issue?

I had a Fox body Mustang GT with dark tint all around. After about a month, California Highway Patrol pulled me over and gave me a "fix-it" ticket, i.e. a fine plus you have to go to a police station and get them to sign off that it has been removed. The police don't like it because they can't see what the occupants are up to on a traffic stop.
Being America, there could well be firearms involved.

I've just had the rear glass tinted on the E63, not because it looks gangsta' or to hid my 9mm but to keep things a bit cooler given the black body work and black interior :D

I 'get' the idea of keeping the interior cooler for dogs/children (although I suspect it doesn't make that much difference in reality), and have had a few cars with 'ugly-kid glass', but I do find the difficulty of seeing through a car to identify hazards, and to see where the driver is looking or make eye contact can, on occasion, be a disadvantage.
