I have a 2001 C220CDI and am having problems with one of the keys and wonder if anyone can help. The key works in the ignition and starts the car ok but will not operate the central locking. If i put key in ignition and switch on ignition then press the buttons on the key repeatedly, the key will then work for a while then goes again. I have been to my local dealer who say key cannot be fixed and I will need a new one. Has anyone else had similar problem and if possible know how to fix.

Swap batteries and see what will happen.
If nothing happens - buy a new key ASAP as you can't be only with one key!

Cheers

I was thinking of the fob batteries too. When in the ignition, the key draws power from the car, not its batteries.

If the key is buggered, I agree you should get another one asap. And don't buy them off fleabay, DAS3 keys can not be recoded for your vehicle and you'll waste your money.

Thanks MBManInKen! Forgot to mention fleabay! Exactly, there is no way that DAS3 will be coded into your car :) (at least at the moment know to me)

Cheers
Chris

The same thing has happened on my dad's W210. How much are they key's from the stealer?

If you have the same thing, shouldn't you too buy new batteries to the key instead of buying a new key (up to you though)?

If it isn't about the battery and if another key works fine with the car (both IR and RF), then there must be an issue with the key. In this case it would not be the typical coil soldering issue, you might be able to fix it with non-security-related parts from an eBay key but you have to have some DIY knowledge.

If the key works when pointing to the door IR receiver but not otherwise, then it would be the remote key antenna at the car side (likely).

My dad said he changed the battery in the fob, but it still doesnt work. However the other key which is rarely used does open the car fine.

Thanks to all that have replied. I have tried new batteries but that didn't help and my other key works fine. Guess i'll just need to bite the bullet and fork out the £200 for a new one. :(
