i have a 1990 R129 500SL, its been fine in all the time ive had it, only around 2-3 weeks now, driven it on the odd occasion, then parked back up (sometimes parked on a steep forward/down facing hill)

after driving the car today, about less than 1 mile down the road, the car started to kangaroo, and then run like a bag of crap.

now when started, it misfires badly and there is a heavy petrol smell.
also the battery light is now on.

any ideas what it could be?

could different fuel have caused some sort of malfunction? i ask this because it was only yesterday i put some petrol in.
i definitely put in petrol! (NOT diesel!!!) :o but not sure if it was regular unleaded, super unleaded, or optimax. i will find out for sure tonight as i have the receipt somewhere, i cant think of anything else that could have caused it, unless it was just bad timing and something to do with regular wear and tear has let go :(

any help would be much appreciated :(

Are you 100% you put petrol in it ?

Check the reciept ...

im pretty sure it was petrol, it definitely wasnt diesel.

Water in petrol, problem with alternator/poly V belt, loose battery terminal??

i hope its a simple fix, called out the AA who are on route at the mo, lucky it went wrong close to home. should be here in a bit, will see what they say. i hope its someone who knows about mercs :(

turned out to be one of the leads rubbing against a pulley or something!
it had cut through the plastic coating on the lead, the guy done a temporary bodge to get me home. need a new lead now! glad it was a simple fix. THANKS TO THE AA :)

p.s. i checked the receipt, and it was definitely normal unleaded that i put in LOL!

never made the mistake of putting in the wrong fuel before, glad i havent started doing it now :)
