problems with my ML270CDI

cheers mate for the reply i think its the prop coupling, it took 3 hours labour to do and £389+vat for the part total £650

I suspect you mean CV joint.
These can fail if either overloaded or the rubber boot splits and allows water ot dirt into the joint.

Sounds like it might have been regularly backed into sea water to launch/retrieve a boat ... IMO that's not going to do it any good at all.

We've got a ML500, bought new Dec 2001, now 101K miles. *all* that has broken (touch wood) is the altenator which gave up the ghost at about 95k (didnt cease and take the belt, just failed) so I changed battery at same time.

The only think that scares me when I think about it is 101k miles at 19 mpg :-(

[edit, and the brake disks / pads / tyres ]

We don't know that. Boat trailers don't require twin electrics, only caravans tequire that.
I think it's been towing a van not a boat.

Hi,
I have a 2003 ML270CDI from new, it now has just under 50,000 miles - so far I have had no serious problems with it. My only advice would be to get used to down-shifting the auto gearbox when slowing down - if you rely solely on the brakes you will eat a set of discs (disks not pads) in around 20,000 miles. (yes - we are on our third pair of front disks).

Not so. Anything with reversing lamps needs twin electrics - that feed is on 12S connector 1.

True, for got about reverse lamps, but would still think a caravan is more likely than a boat trailer, as the fridge and 12v supply is normally why people want the 12s connector.
