Can anyone help me please??

I have a number of problems with my 98 SLK 230!! Firstly the supercharger cuts out when under load and can only be reset by turning ingition off. I believe it is blocked valve any ideas where this is located and how to clean it? Also the power steering has failed would this be related?
My central locking has failed too, it will lock with the fob buttons and alarm is activated, but when de-actived alarm turns off but locking will not open and have to use the key. Very annoying at petrol stations as you have to use emerg lever in the boot. Oh yeah and the interior light is continuously on so I have had to slect the off position. This car is immaculate and low mileage (48K) so Im very dissapointed with it so far!! :(

It's most likely the part on the side of the airbox I have circled.

It's a tad sluggish without the supercharger isn't it!

MB should be able to confirm the fault codes mean that valve or "air flap" as they call it is faulty. I had an intermitant fault that then became permanant and a replacement valve resolved it. Oh, MB also said I needed a new ECU, but I now think they just felt like robbing me of ~£750 extra to cover up them taking 4 days to find such a basic and fundamental fault.

Are the power steering pump and Kompressor driven by the same poly V belt?

S.

Hehe in my totally unqualified opinion yes - as I think there is only one very long belt which seems to drive everything.

Ahh, I wasn't sure, I thought that maybe the Kompressor had a dedicated belt. If your Kompressor's gone and the power steering doesn't work that could be an indication of something wrong with the main fan belt but then your coolant pump would also be non functional and you should also have a red dash tell tale light illuminated showing that the battery is not receiving any charge.

Actually, I can't see how Stevie can use the car if the power steering has failed, you must have arms like a gorilla mate ;) :)

When the power steering failed on my car a month or so ago, it was positively dangerous to use at speeds below 10 mph as the steering required so much brute force to achieve any steering effect. Maybe the SLK is a bit lighter on its feet when the power steering fails.

i think there is lots on the same belt , as when the air con dies , the whole car is kinda messed up

FWIW, there are definately two seperate drive belts on my W202 C230K, with air-con :)

Sorry to hear of your problems Stevie. If it were me, I would remove the hose clip circled in Graham's photo, and clean the valve if it was dirty (just for good measure!). IIRC That valve should be open at tickover or slightly above ~ 1500 RPM, (to allow bypass of the S/C when it is not running. Once the S/C (Kompressor) engages the magnetic clutch, I am sure that the stepper motor closes the flap so that the output of the S/C passes straight throught the I/C and MAF into the throttle body, otherwise the kompressor would end up recirculating air in the air box, and the benefit of the boost would be lost!

HTH,

Will

Thanks guys found the supercharger problem - there is a 2 pin loom beneath the item Graham circled and it was hangin loose. Plugged it in and away we go. Still have the other problems to sort out tho!! Saves goin to the gym mind!!

Brilliant :bannana: , glad you got it sorted :)

Hi all, Im new to Benz, got fed up with BMW so fancied a change - where is the best place to buy parts for my SLK? need PAS pump and some interior cosmetics such as mirror joystick and a new light sensitive rear view mirror. I also want to get the central locking looked at without the MB costs any ideas? - i'm based just outside wolverhampton. Any thoughts appreciated.

As far as your central locking is concerned ,

I was reading a thread the other day and some where it said, there is a control relay sited in the boot on the right hand side of the car, and if the car is cleaned and washed off with loads and loads of water sometimes the water manages to bypass the boot seals and make it's way into the control relay, which opperates the central locking system, causing it to malfunction.Dry it off, spray with WD40 and refit.

This don't happen on the facelift cars as the relay is turned upside down .The way to overcome future problems is to wrap the relay in a plastic bag?

Cabin lights are also opperated by the boot switch (they are all on the same circuit), so give this the once over to check that it is working correctly, likewise check that the door switches are working correctly.

For parts go to your local dealer.
For servicing go to Andy Gayle. WWW.mercedesservicing.com

Water gets into PSE unit.
remove spare wheel
Remove jack etc
Next to it is a foam box with PSE inside.
Carefully open foam box (very NEAT fit).
Check for moisture in bottom.
If evidence of water then you may beluck by dring out and spraying.
If not new PSU required.
Water gets in and buggers the connectors and PCB.
