Processor upgrades?

I would suggest selling your whole DELL pc, some people like Dell computers, then buy/build a new one to the spec you need.

I used to follow the upgrade route, but have realised it is better to buy/build for a specific requirement (as future proofing is a joke) and then sell it on and replace when the need changes. I go through about 2 PC's a year at the moment  I can't wait for the new nVidia 6800 Ultra

I hope that makes sense, it does to me!

Well they do list this CPU which states:3.0GHz Intel Pentium® 4 CPU "Northwood" (400MHz) FSB 512Kb Cache *oem and This *OEM Cpu is for use with Older motherboards which are not compatiable with the 533/800 Pentium cpus.

That's interesting as the Intel site doesn't list a 400MHz FSB processor greater than 2.6GHz.

Indeed the williamette was the 400Mhz core, Northwood was designed to run at 533 and 800.

looks good, cant find that on their standard price list, or am I just missing it.

Plus what price is it?

Craig

It was on the main page of the weblink Graham posted.

3.0GHz (PC-400FSB) Intel Pentium® OEM 4 Processor 400MHz FSB S478
+ 512Mb PC3200 (PC400) DDR Memory £153.50 Ex VAT £180.36 Inc VAT

It doesn't list the price without the memory.

Hmm, yes I see it now, twice on the same page, where's my glasses gone...

Only question now is, how is brave enough to buy one and test it in there DELL?

Craig

one last thought on these upgrades....

Intel changed socket at around 1.7 from Socket S423 to Socket S478, my friends 1.4Ghz 400Mhz FSB Dell has the older S423 CPU socket.

Just make sure your Socket is the right type

Craig

I have mailed a link to this thread to a friend of mine that works at scan :)

EDIT:

we have a reply:
--------------------------------
Intel Celeron CPU's are all 400 FSB.
The new Celeron 'D' Cpu's will be 533 FSB,

However we DO have CPU/P4/S478/400/3.0 3.0GHz P4 400FSB CPU 512K (LN
7082)
Which is a 400 FSB 3.0ghz CPU.

£105.30
--------------------------------

so there we go.

Just called Scan, they no longer have them in stock. He said they have had problems with those CPU's so were being sent back.
