Question on oil level

Picked my SLK320 (2001) after the B service and it looks like the oil is over-filled. The level seems well over the max indicator. Why can't they get this right for £500 and what are the consequences of running the car like this?

That's just lazy workmanship. My last car was delivered from new with the dip stick showing exactly half full and when I asked they said it was MB policy to fill to half way on the indicator so it couldn't be overfull when the oil expanded thus risking damage to the cat.

I trust you're checking it on a level surface.

It blows oil past the oil seals.

Get it sorted asap.

Damage to the cat was exactly what I was worried about. (Yes, I checked it on a level surface). I'm on my fourth cat so I know how much these cost. Thanks for the info. I'll take it back tomorrow.

Hope you get it sorted out. They should give you a Christmas Present for your trouble. :D

My current car doesn't have a dip stick, as it's read electronically by the car. I have to be very careful to make sure it was hot before stopping and is parked on the level so I can get an accurate reading. Considering the damage that could be done, I'd almost rather have a dipper.

They are spoofing you. They fill it to the halfway mark then they should run the engine, stop it and let it settle and then top it up. They forgot to top it up. The max indicator allows for expansion.

Incidently they now have dip-sticks back on their new cars.

Brian, are you suggesting I can get a dip stick for my R230 so I can check it manually.

No unfortunately. The later cars like mine have dip-sticks again. The previous 320CDI engine had the digital read out like yours. They are not 100% reliable which is why I think they have discontinued them.

It's odd really. The dip stick tube on mine has a red removable cap just like the manual dippers but it looks like they just pulled the wire out. Makes me wonder how they get the level just right on a service as there is always some oil left in the engine when they drain so they can't guage exactly how much to put back in.

Must be a very long wire for a big V8, Malc.

That tube with the cap is the gearbox tube and not engine

Don't presume that they even changed the oil. It has been known for them to just top it up. Same in all garages.

How would you ever know it was changed, unless you actually seen it being done, or changed it yourself ?

THE RED REMOVABLE CAP IS THE ENGINE OIL DIP STICK CAP, THE GEAR BOX CAP IS BLACK WITH A SMALL RECTANGULAR RED TAB, YOU CAN BUY THE ENGINE OIL DIPSTICK FROM ANY MERCEDES PARTS COUNTER AND CHECK THE OIL YOURSELF BUT YOU WOULD NEED THE PART NUMBER AS IT IS A SPECIAL TOOL

Ditto on that, we always use it for checking oil levels if the tube is installed.

Digi read out or not.

W120 589 07 21 00, i think but i will double check at work in the morning.
