Hi

I have just brought a 1971 SL (non runner). The bodywork is exceptionally good!

Having brought the car blind from an auction I am starting to notice a few bits which I need address. The first being the fuel pump.

The previous owner has connected the pump directly to the battery with a switch. He has also removed the fuel filter? Did the 1971 model have a filter next to the pump? I have a w116 and a w126 which both have filters next to the pump. There is no cradle / holder for the pump, he has used tie wraps to hold it in place.

I have started the engine by pouring petrol into the air intake and she started straight away.

Can anyone help with the following;

1. Should it have a fuel filter?
2. Where is the fuel pump relay located?
3. Part numbers for pump, relay, filter?
4. Where to get cheap parts

It sounds like a fuel filter change went a bit off piste and was 'roadsided' to get it running.
Probably the filter had to be changed due to leaking through rust, the basket/holder assembly was rusted solid.

You might find the best way to go is track down the appropriate parts from a specialist breaker and restore them as required.

the pump for this car is one from w114 not w126 model, no filter from memory, ecu usually in the fuse box but not sure where kickstart is located in 1971, the fact it is wired it is to by pass circuit.

Congrats on the car. You should be aware that as a 1971 car it will have D-Jetronic fuel injection which is similar to the much later 'common rail' type.
As such the rubber pipes supplying fuel to the injectors are under constant pressure and the integrity of these pipes is paramount. One of the first tasks you should consider is to check these pipes for cracks or hardness and replace them before any other job.
On a sad note, I have a good friend who fairly recently lost his pristine 1971 350 to fire after one of these pipes split: so the above is no idle comment.

If you posted the Vin of the car we could check the parts EPC for relevant items.
 
The fuel pump power supply is controlled by the ECU. If it has failed then that would explain the supplementary switch.
 
Thanks, just looked in the glove box, ecu is missing!!! Cable is there but no box.

I will post some photos when I learn how to upload them!
