You should be able to get two short bolt-in pipes made up to replace the secondary cats ... which would be easily reversible?

This is one option on my list.

Another is CKS Performance does a replacement backbox for £350 fitted which allegedly sounds much nicer. This would be a nice simple swap that I could reverse with ease should I wish to go back to OEM.

I'm undecided with the look of the back box though - there's a choice of twin oval or twin square.

What do you think?

I'm not personally a great fan of non-OE backboxes. They are normally hung lower than the standard one (because the generic oval shape doesn't really fit the space where the original went), which spoils the look for me. Might be less obvious if sprayed black rather than left as shiny stainless steel?

But I prefer the oval tailpipes ;)

I'm in the same camp I think. :o

Another option might be to mod. the standard back box i.e. get it opened up, some of the baffles removed, and welded shut again. Somebody here did this with an R230, IIRC.

I wonder what these sound like?

Maybe Sebring still do one for the R129 today?

Interesting - worth a few searches.

Have to say my AMG back box made no difference really to the exhaust note. If I'd paid anything near the outrageous RRP (which I didn't - it came from eBay.de) I'd have been pretty disappointed. Looks great though :D

I can buy all sorts in Japan... its just getting it back here that is the interesting bit.

I can see AMG ones, Lorinser, Remus, Carlsson - all going for small money. There's probably a decent profit to be made in filling up a container of exotic Merc parts and shipping them back to Europe.

did you need to cut the bumper for that? mine is 97 like yours and has an "invisible" exhaust as std.... Am i right in thinking that worst case a small trim of the lower bumper would mean any of the back boxes would fit?

No, in fact I had to cut the exhaust! It's an AMG R129 "accessory" back box, designed to go with an AMG bodykit. Without the rear skirt the tailpipes sit too low, so I had a body shop cut and re-weld them to lift them up.

Spike,
by the way can do a lot better and cheaper than CKS

You are in essex though.

A place where I no longer venture unless it is an absolute emergency.

Looking at the pictures of the work done on your car, I can see why its cheap. Sorry, but it looks awful.

In addition to this, I see that you are advertising at every opportunity - It needs to stop.

I've been on the trawl for a shiny exhaust tip for my car for ages and failed. There were some on Ebay (Germany) but expensive and not in the best condition.

The tip was already painted black (1st pic), so I took it off and painted it black (Hammerite) to give it some gloss. It still looked wrong:(

I'm currently having a set of M5 alloys finished in chrome powdercoat (see my Sador refurb thread for the colour), so asked the firm if they would do the tip.

After chemical dipping and prep, it looks like this. Thoughts?

Would anyone know the part number for this exhaust tip/shroud?
I believe i am missing it from my later exhaust so cant check via chasis number.
Cheers

Wonderful, thanks!

Its just a normal bolt. (an M6 if I remember correctly)
