I'm importing a 2001 LHD R129 320SL Final Edition from Germany to the UK.

Can anyone recommend a good/cheap insurer of LHD vehicles? (I have no intention of converting to RHD!).

Also, I saw in another thread the mention of 2001 or before qualifying for 'classic car' insurance status. Surely not?!

Many thanks in advance and apologies if this is an oft asked question. I'm new! Cheers G.

Hello G, and welcome!

As far as most insurance companies are concerned, classic status applies at 10 or even 15 years old. Even then, not every company will make any concessions for a 'classic'.

I certainly don't know of a specialist LHD insurer. I would think it's such a small market, that nobody will address it specifically. Any number of people on here can give you advice and points-of-view re insurance. I can only really talk about classic policies.

I don't tend to give useful advice, I just talk a lot....... :)

Alot of insurance companies are reluctant to insure LHDs without charging the extra premium (as LHD is considered more of a risk on the roads and more likely than a RHD to be involved in an accident). Your best bet is proably try an Insurance company/broker that specialises in modifed cars i.e. performance cars.

You may have to bite the bullet on this one and pay the extra premium...

Naturally this means cheaper insurance if you choose to drive the car on the continent where all traffic is LHD... ain't gonna happen!

I had no problem with my LHD german R107 - but that was tax-exempt and a proper classic - £300 fully comp with Classicline.

My '99 SL500 is on a modern classic policy (has to be over 5 years old hence 2001) but was harder to get insured this way. Try Peter Best insurance 01376-573-033.

Many thanks guys. I'll give that contact a try. Cheers G.
