I need a runabout and I've been half tempted by a 2004 e350 SLK, prices seem to be very much at the bottom end, this one is sub £2k it needs a small amount of paint to address tin worm on the front wings and before I go and view are there any particular issues beyond rust, the roof, a good service history to look for?

Thanks in advance

Paul

Rear subframe, brake lines, engine issues?

If it’s been neglected cosmetically I wonder how well it’s been looked after mechanically? Just a thought :)

Rust!

Engine oil leaks, balance shaft wear, thermostats and the biggest issue-roof leaks.

They are cheap for a reason.

This was very useful for me when checking the SLK. Just be thorough and walk away if in doubt. If you need more detailed checklists on specific areas - I have some. Good luck.

Thanks everyone for your sage like advice, I have some reading to do before considering this one for runabout status.

Just buy a good one, with low-ish mileage, good history, and get it on a ramp to check the subframe. They’re lovely little cars, I wish I’d tried one sooner, I’d been missing out.

Investigate the paintwork bubbling front wings (I suspect lower front corner) as the mounting brackets holding this corner of the front wings are rubbish and rust, causing rust on the lower front corners of the wings - I have this, and was recently advised that it is not a quick and easy repair. @Blobcat knows this all too well!
