Hi people,
I’ve bought a 2013 SLK with the panoramic roof but it’s got a solid shell inside?????
What’s the point of that Herr Benz?
Does anyone have or know where I can acquire this part without spending £2-300 on a piece of thin plastic
Thanks in advance

Does your datacard record the car has the OE factory Magic Sky roof? If not, then although you have the same actual glass roof as the Magic Sky (dark purplish tint, not actually completely opaque), MB fitted the shell to prevent owners simply having the Magic Sky controller fitted and thereby getting a pano roof 'on the cheap'.

Thanks for the reply E55BOF, where would I find the datacard? I didn’t mention that the headlining I require is the version with the central part cut out 😖 (although you probably guessed that)
But how kind of MB to consider the sun block factor on people’s heads with a solid shell

Run your VIN through lastvin.com and all will be revealed. Please keep us updated

The R172 came with three roof options: Plain, Pano, and Magic Sky.

AFAIK, the difference twixt the Pano and Magic Sky is not just the absence of the controller, but also the active glazed element.

The Plain roof uses the same (dumb) glass panel as the Pano roof, but a solid internal headliner and I believe can be converted to Pano by changing that internal headliner for one with the aperture in it.

Ok, so I entered the VIN into data card (lastvin.com) and I didn’t realise how many options were on a SLK!!!
My roof code is
FIXED GLASS ROOF WITH INNER HEADLINER 4U8

My 2012 had it as Option "415 GLASS ROOF (ROADSTER)." There was no inner headliner.

Glad to help. That is the great thing about it - you usually discover things you did not know about!

Oh, and....... :ttiuwp

Having scoured the internet, it seems the headlining with the aperture is extremely popular, I’m not in a hurry as we’ve had a rubbish summer and autumn is now upon us, so if one turns up, I’m in the market for it
Thanks to all who helped 👍
