I miss the sound of my old TVR so I am taking the SL in to Infinity Exhausts to have the secondary cats removed next Friday. I have a friendly MOT tester so I am not worried about that... I'll do it in stages, this is Stage 1, if it's still too quiet I'll delete the silencers too and see how that goes.

I've listened to a few videos of Stage 1 and it sounds nice, can't find many videos of Stage 2 though so if anyone has any please send a link :-)

Yes, that is indeed lovely.. That's what I'm booked in for on Friday, and if that's not loud enough I'll take the rear boxes off too and see how that sounds :-)

I've heard a car with the innards of the rear box removed and it was very loud. Depends on your use but the owner of that car said it did drone when on the motorway. Doing the secondary cats you get no downside that I can tell - apart from dipped fuel economy due to wanting to hear the exhaust under acceleration :-)

Back from the exhaust shop today, it's still too quiet LOL.

It's louder under acceleration but even witht he roof down it's still too tame for me. I'll let the good lady listen to it over the weekend but think I'll be booking it back in to replace the rear boxes with something a bit more tonal...

I'd love to hear a video of how it sounds now. Could you possibly provide one?

I'll see if I can persuade SWMBO to sit in it later and rev it up a little, you'll have to ignore just how dirty it is, I did some off-roading in it yesterday as the lane the Sat Nav sent me down was flooded and I had to cross a field to get back on a dry road!

I wasn't happy about that but with the suspension on its highest setting it felt like a RR anyway!

All that's been done so far is the secondary cat removal, but at £100 I thought it was a bargain, the next step is £300 to replace the rear silencers with smaller ones.

Infinity Exhausts seem like a really nice bunch of guys :-)

Not 100% certain how to embed videos but here it is: Video

it actually doesn't sound quite as raspy as that might make it seem. It's still too quiet after the TVR but it'll do for the moment..

Good man - I hope you didn't put SWMBO out too much! That sounds lovely. It always sounds a little tamer revving at idle than it does under load. What are you after in terms of sound? More of a bass note?

A little more bass would be good, but a lot more volume would be even better. I never turned the stereo on in the TVR, I just listened to the exhaust, even on long runs and I knew I'd miss that.

I know the SL isn't the same style of car and i ought to be more "mature" about it but I run open pipes on my bikes and love the ROAR (and raw) sound..

I'm going to book it in for the rear boxes, maybe even next week and then leave it alone :-)

The deal SWMBO made was that she helped out with the recording and I get the same done to her SLK - seems only fair

Sounds like you have a good woman there Jules. Which SLK do you have as our 300 has a nice note but that could do with some more presence - we miss the sound of the flat six and sports exhaust in our old Porsche :-(

I'd be very interested to hear the results of the next phase of your SL exhaust mod.

Jude has an R171 350, it's lovely, low miles and very pretty (just like Jude LOL). 33 years into our relationship and she still screams "go faster" :-)

I've been called in to work this week now so may have to wait until the New Year to get the next step done, we're off to Malta for New Years :-)

Nothing to do with this thread; just Hello from Malta :thumb: Hope you enjoy it here.;)

Did the same mod to mine a few months ago, the second cats were rattling, best easiest mod I"ve ever done. I"ve owned a few "Yanks" and it was nice to hear a V8 again. : )

Again - nothing to do with this thread but if you're at a loose end on New Years eve we'll be at Bar 81 in Pretty Bay if you fancy a drink or two..

I keep trying to PM you but I don't know what happens to them :wallbash:

Are you receiving them??
