R230 SL500 Roof - how quick

The SLK - that's a Secretary's car, isn't it?

I couldn't possibly comment on that :D

Of course it's being dropped by MB (well, the SLC as it is now), which is interesting.

Depends which SLK and which Secretary... Check out the performance figures for the R171 SLK55; only a fraction slower to 60 than an R230 SL55. No stock SL500 prior to an R231 can keep up, and when you stand on the loud pedal it lunges forward, bellowing, as a 'proper' AMG should.

As I tell Mrs MikeInWimbledon, less than one in a thousand Secretaries are fast.

I don’t mention that they’re all cheap and a snug fit. Because that would be rude.

Different cars, handling and build quality. It’s all in the platform and the price.

They certainly are. The SLK55 is a stripped-down (by Mercedes standards) hot rod, and handles much better than the SL500; no wonder, with 650 lb. less weight. The SL500 is aimed at a rather different market, of course, and the SLK has much stiffer suspension as well.

Not only was it cheaper to buy, it also has much less propensity to empty the owner's wallet...

I'm looking forward to getting an SL55; I prefer the softer ride of the SL500. Must be getting old...(er...).
