Hi All, did a search but could not find recommeded tyre sizes for R230 for 17", 18" and 19" wheels..

Thinking that 18's and 19s could be costly ?

Have read that front tyres last 15k miles ? How about the rears ?

Thoughts and experiences ?

You need to know the width of the wheel as well as the diameter before anyone can recommend tyre sizes.

Your other two points again provide only one part of the required information & don't even merit an answer.

Maybe if you came back with full & sensible questions you will get genuine answers.

Bit of info I have, Is there not a section in the handbook? Mines out in the garage if you dont have one then I will dig it out and read it for you.

Front tyres - 255/40/R18 - 95W
8.5 inch wide

Rears - 285/35/R18 - 97W
9.5 inch wide

the code 660 in the data card indicates that this car had 225/75/R16 tyres

code 666 indicates the wheels it had. Obviously changed??
comments are of a sheet I keep for my car.
Like driving a hovercraft!!

OUCH !!

Sincere apologies I was under the mis-aprehension that standard factory fit wheels would come in set widths for a given diameter. Appreciate folks might put on non mercedes wheels but would look to preserve the recommended widths ?

anyone else help or is there no such thing as a recommended diameter / width as with other manufacturers ?

Depending on the engine size and age of the R230, different wheel sizes are standard fit from the factory. Then there are optional MB wheels which can be purchased from new.

Do you have a particular model and year in mind? That would help narrow down your question and provide accurate answers.

Typically, R230's are fitted with 8.5 inch wide wheels front and 9.5 inch wide wheels rear. Some come standard with 17 inch diameter wheels, others with 18 inch. MB optional wheels are 17, 18 and 19 inch diameter. The most common diameter seems to be 18 inch in which case the tyre sizes quoted above with wider wheels at the rear are spot on...

Front tyres - 255/40/R18 - 95W
8.5 inch wide

Rears - 285/35/R18 - 97W
9.5 inch wide

Regards,

it's all pretty stanard and rarely are non-mixed 18/19" wheels fitted. Summarised as follows:
17 > 2554517
18 > 2554018 2853518
19 > 2553519 2853019

2257516 mentioned above probably relates to spacesaver spare, it isn't a regular wheel

Thanks all :)

still finalising the spec of R230 I will be buying in early 2011 (probably the 350 Unlikely to have the trick suspension (ABC ?) found as standard on the 500 + models - sory V8 lovers !!)
Whilst I would prefer the larger wheels with lower profile tyres the roads in my area are absolutely awful so thinking about the 17" wheels with the slightly larger profile to soften things a bit ?

My SL350 rides well on its 18 inch wheels and we have some truly dreadful roads around here. It is a little harsh at times, but on those occasions when we find a lovely smooth section of road (usually abroad or in Wales, oh, right, yes, abroad) the 18's give it a lovely tight feeling in the bends. Having said that, I don't have any experience of the 17's, just to say the 18's aren't that bad and in my opinion look better.

Firstly can i just say i think you are doing the right thing checking out everything before buying a car [ I don't know what happened to the Christmas sprit in post 2  ].

I did the same thing when i was looking for a car, i choose the wheels i wanted, and ruled out any cars that did not have them [ 18 inch 5 spoke options], there was no point buying a car with wheels i did not like and then spending loads of money changing them, [ there is a good choice of cars for sale out there].

Saying that, in the end i bought a car with 19inch AMG option wheels which i think are just as nice, as for the ride i find it very good, the SL is quite a refined car and it will not rattle your fillings out like some sports cars i have owned.
Good luck in your hunt

Hello - I wonder if anyone has tried to put slightly wider tyres on the SL63 (late model SL55)?

Here in Australia - we only had the 18 inch wheels on the SL55. The later SL63 had the 19's.

My car has the SL63 19's with the standard 255/35R19 fronts and the 285/30R19's rears. One of the rears is dead now. I would like to go ONE size wider.

So ideally - 265/35R19's front and 295/30R19 rears. The miata conversion site and 1010 tires site both indicate the speed difference is no problem.

Has anyone tried this exact set-up - and have you had any issues?

THANKS IN ADVANCE!

305/30/19 should not be an issue also. I run 305/25/20 with no issues. The fronts will have a larger diameter than the rear, so if any issue it would be there. 295/30/19 will be safe.

Thank you

Thanks so much F1BHP for your suggestion on the rears. 305 - wow. Tempting - but think I may have an issue with the wheel size relative to the width. But your advice on 295/30R19 is PERFECT.

Would anyone know regarding the fronts - are 255/35R19 - want to go wider to 265/35R19.

Appreciate your help!

My query is related to the space saver/collapsable emergency wheel. My SLR230 has 18 inch on both axles, the question is what size wheel do I need?
P.S. The pump came with the car but I found that the emergency wheel was missing. I had not checked this before parting with the money.:wallbash:

For what its worth my wife's R230 sl 350 2006 had 17 inch wheels when we bought it but I didnt like the look so switched them for the 18 inch AMG 111 wheels. Looked much better but totally ruined the ride (in comparison to the 17s) couldnt believe 1" could do so much damage

The guy above you is asking about a space saver...all the rest were from years ago.

So...do you have a space saver, and what size is it?

wwww.discounttire.com

They have a tire calculator for specific make model (SL350 will not be listed as not a US import) and show plus sizes.

My 2008 SL500 (230) had 18in wheels (8.5 FA and 9.5 RA) and I ran 255/40 tyres on all 4- perfectly balanced and ran well (I’ve even some near new Dunlop 3D Wintersports in my garage I need to sell...)

i have just bought some 19" wheels off a s500, the tyres are 245/45/19 and 275/40/19 and they do not fit, I need new longer bolts and also the tyres need a lower profile, the wont even sit on the hub as they hit the suspension nut that's straight above the tires at the front.

anyone with 19s confirm which tyres they run, thanks guys

You need to check the ET's and witch's of the new wheels to make sure they are suitable. The correct size 19" wheels will have tyres 255/35 on the front and 285/30 on the rear.
