Hello folks. Hoping for some guidance. Got my car a year past Feb and so far it stands me around £3k so I'm hoping to be able to fix this issue myself.

The car went in to get a fair bit of work done last November to a local Merc. specialist. One of the jobs was replacement of all 6 glow plugs as the car was flinging the glow plug light back on once started to signify fault. They said 3 broke in the head but they tapped and pulled them and when i got the car back there was no glow plug light coming back on. The plugs were Bosch and supplied by myself. They also had the turbo out of the car for some work at the same time.

However, when i started the car the next day it started first time without issue but ran lumpy as hell at tickover for about 5-6 seconds with a bit of smoke from unburnt fuel then leveled out and ran fine. It continues to do this for the first start of the day every day. Once it's been up to temp it doesn't do it again until the next morning or until it has fully cooled down after 5-6 hours sitting on a cooler day. It started without issue right through the minus winter temps but just has this lumpy 4-5 seconds on first start-up. The car pulls like a train and runs fine otherwise without issue. I took it back to the garage at the time and they stated that they reckon i have an injector or 2 starting to leak back. The car was absolutely fine before it went in.

I have seen on here a few posts about changing the glow plug relay out has solved their issues. Is this worth a try? Could the injectors be the issue? Do they go bad with just sitting (they had the car for 2-3 weeks)? As i say the car has never let me down and starts within the first 1-2 seconds of turning over every time but is just lumpy for this initial 4-5 seconds with unburnt fuel from the exhaust (both exhausts too).

Any advice or guidance would be very much appreciated.

Cheers,
Benny.

Hi there, I have an ML 320 CDI and likewise when I bought the car it had been standing for a while. The day after I got it the glowplug light stayed on for a minute or so after a cold start so I took it to a local Merc specialist. They plugged it in and turned out to be a faulty glowplug, changed that but didnt solve the issue, turned out to be the relay which is an easy fix and easy diy but the relay costs about £120. After doing it mine has been fine ever since. Worth getting it hooked up to read any fault codes before you go ahead.

Cheers bud. Once your glow plugs were changed but with the relay still faulty was the glow plug light still coming on or did it stay off with the relay requiring to be changed?

Once the plug was changed the light did still come on but not for as long as it had before. I would suggest getting it down to a good independant with STAR to see what fault codes show up and also I think there is an option to do a 'smooth runnning' test and that might through some light on whats going on before you shell out £120 on a new relay. Believe me I have just spent £500 on various bits and pieces because I decided to go to a crap garage and it ended up being a wheel bearing which my mate diagnosed and cost me £160 all in for him to do it at his garage.

Ok, will do. Cheers.
