What I do know is its not an ambeint light sensor
which is more than all you have come up with seeing that there is over 1500 people who had read this thread and no body is shaw or ever heard of, and yes I did ask what it was and has anybody had any knowledge

No it has not been a waste of time it shows the forward thinking of Mercedes one of the designers put the round thing there knowing at sometime in life someone will ask what it is for and all it did was get us all talking about Mercedes cars.
My own W210 has this hole and until it does something it is just an empty hole for an accessory that has not been fitted. Dont Mercs come build sheet that lists all fitted extras if that says radar/laser detector then photo the sheet and put it up here.. Just a thought could Mr JCB not have fitted a profits up detector linked to his office evertime a new JCB was sold a signal sent to the car flashed the light and he said profit are up again...

Not a waste, I've learnt not to entrust my MB to DCP Mercedes Restoration Specialists. God knows what it could come back as!!!

Ok so you all doubt me, well did you know that ther is an electric garage door opener fitted as an option to rearview mirror on 210's and 208's circa 1998 which will pickup
laser guns ?

CKLclive, its not looking good for you mate, garage door openers (the illegal kind) were put on to stop lasers pinpointing your car hence not being able to reflect the signal back to get a speed, the operator would get an error, they were not there to detect.

and the mb option was on the rear view mirror nothing in the cluster

I knew there was an M-B option for garage door opener, but that's a radio-based system ... nothing to do with laser. And not linked to a light on the fuel gauge either
