Well though I had better check out my coolant problem as its needing a refill about every 4th day and what with the frost at the minute it needs sorting.

So the good news it not the radiator.

The bad new its not a pipe

But it is this thing

What is it? How much is it likely to cost? It does look very simple to fit though.

It looks like it may be an oil cooler. Where is it mounted and are there any other pipes leading to it?

On the E55 the oil cooler was next to the oil filter.

Does look like an oil cooler though.... Maybe the gearbox oil cooler

It is mounted in the front drivers wheel arch. There is a plastic shield the needed removing to get to it and there are two pipes going into the top.

You can see better on this pic.

Could it be something to do with the A/C ? Having a V8 there might not be enough room to put it in the usual place on a W202.

I am now sure it's a remote oil cooler. I bet the other pipes go to the oil filter housing.
If necessary just bypass it and don't thrash the car too much for too long. In reality the oil won't get too hot in this weather.

Ring up your MB dealer and tell them where the part is and they should tell you what it is.

Try MB colindale, 0208 205 1212, always helpful!

Just called MB of Derby. Asked for oil cooler. £83+VAT Not too bad, well about what I expected anyway. Then I asked what its location was and he said next to the oil filter

I have now sent them a link to my pic and waiting for them to call me back.

The oil cooler on the V8 AMG is located next to the oil filter, its part of the housing. That definately looks like an oil cooler, the only other thing i could think of was for the gearbox oil but not sure.

Yeah they called me back and are pretty shure it the transmission cooler. This is what they sent me.

Oh well good excuse for a gearbox oil change then I guess.

I detect a big bill :( £140 +VAT for transmission oil cooler. Just what you need this time of year

Shaun, do you think you'll be able to do the work yourself?

If it wasn't an oil cooler I would do but the gearbox oil will need changing or at least topping up so dont hink I will. Besides there is also the time aspect I must have about 5 projects on the go at the minute.
