Andy Gale (or mrcedesservicing.com fame) called me today re my CL

front left roadspring broken

but anyway - the door seals in his opinion needed replacing - at 160 quid EACH plus vat  (this is the one that goes from the front of the door to the back of the rear window in one long thing)

so - is it worth, say taking them off and scrubbing them in hot water and mild soap to try to revive a bit of life into them?

any other tips?

Hmm, not sure, but let me know how you get on with the service from there in general.

i was happy that he phoned me - he took the initiative to order one part (14 quid) without bothering to call, but did call to see if i wanted one or two roadsprings done - i opted for two (i thought that 8 years of (ab)use they might have sagged a bit - esp with a quater of a tonne of V8 sitting on them ;)

If the door seal is the same type of fixing as on the W124CE's then it doesnt actually seal an awful lot, there are two or three separate seals that stop the wind noise. It may be worth using an Armourall type rubber revivor on the seal and if it doesn't do any good, then replace it yourself as its probably only a 10 minute job anyway.

By all accounts, it doesntsound like you had any idea it was a problem, in which case, why not leave it for now and see what you can do with it.

i asked him to hav a look at the windows as thre is a problem - there is an abnoying small wind noise problem.

i reckon its a front to back seal prob - he said that theres no point in trying to fix it until the main over the top seal is replaced... but at 160+ quid its a bit annoyng in case its not that.

where do i find this armourall stuff then?

parts are 140 720 05 54 and 04 54 for the main ones
and 140 673 03 70 / 04 70 for the rear window seal (66 dollars)

so I'd rather have a go tahn spend this kind of dosh for an unknown problem

Armor-All is available from Halfords... ;) It's a white liquid that dries oily clear, excellent for tyre sidewalls as it lasts longer then the usual tyre foams.

I would say that Andy Gale was smart enough to notice that the breather pipe from my right bank to the throttle had gone soft like plasticene (sp) and he thought this might be the issue with a missfire.

He also said that it was OTT for him to remove the front bumper to check the condition of the connectors for the parking sensors, he could have done this, but didn't - to save me money ;)

80 quid service (minor)
110 quid springs
3 hours labour for springs
full diagnostic check
14 quid pipe
bit of mucking about with parking sensors
560 quid total = 470 + vat

so for labour it was 270 (but I might have forgotten somthing)

overall quite happy...
