Mercedes E320 cdi sport
So I checked vin number and decoder came up with no dpf, checked handbook recommendation and got shell helix ultra 229.5, just seen under bonnet sticker saying 229.31 or 228.51, give up with oil now

The oil you have bought is just fine ,stop worrying.

229.31 at time of manufacture - this has been superseded so as HB said don't worry!

Looking under car it does look like there is a dpf filter there comparing against picture in haynes manual, yet when I decoded vin number it never had the code for dpf filter, would it still look the same whether it has one or not?

Also exhaust tailpipe is caked in soot indicating it hasn't, just confused as to canister underneath looking like one

Well, as we know, the Haynes Manual is the bible for all things automotive & likely to be more accurate than MB's own manual & guidance.

I'd go with that.

Dunno, would the catalytic converter be where the dpf filter would be?

Would it cause muxh problems using oil if it was dpf even though it says on vin it hasn't

Probably is a catalytic converter and not a dpf, as previously said if your exhaust is sooty you don't have one, what year is the car?

Its a 56 plate registered jan 07, definately not on vin decoding just seems strange it says on engine oil code for low ash

229.51 is fine, it supercedes the older codes. I use it in my none dpf c220 cdi.

Many thanks for all the advice, just googled catalytic converter and looks like what I'm looking at on car, will go ahead and use oil I've got and ignore sticker on engine, that'll be the end of my oil questions you'll all be pleased to here lol, just didn't wanna get it wrong being that I live this car and wanna look after it

The difference between 229.5 and 229.51 is the formulation of the anti wear additives. 229.51 is a so called low SAPs oil i.e. it's low in Sulphated Ash and Phosphorous so that if any oil gets into the combustion chamber the unburned residues won't block the DPF. 229.51 uses some ashless anti wear additives to avoid the problem.

Can you use a 229.51 oil in a car without a DPF or a petrol car - yes it still has antiwear additives only different ones.

Can you use 229.5 oil in a car with a DPF - no but to put it in perspective it's important to under stand the mechanism that causes a problem. First of all the the engine has to be an oil burner to cause any problem at all and even if the engine does burn oil the effect is not instant but cumulative. So it's not the end of the world if you use the wrong oil or have to top up with the wrong oil, just put the right stuff when an opportunity arises.

Can't believe we only got to 2 pages with this topic.

I know!

These OCD threads are usually good for at least 50 posts AFTER the op has been told the solution to their issue, which was Post 2 in this thread.

What amazes me is that having been given all the right information, they continue to get all stressed about it. Hate to think what will happen when it comes to buying tyres..!!! Wonder if the Easter Eggs caused another crisis.
