Rear caliper sticking

Long story short I’ve repaced discs/pads all round on my E63, coming home last night the nsr caliper seized up whilst on the motorway causing the disc to glow orange and smoke.
After checking today there is 2 hairline cracks on inner part of the disc.
First question can anybody help where to get the caliper Refurbed or replaced.
2nd how safe/unsafe is the discs to travel on short distances.

This company have been recommended before. I have no experience of using them myself though.

Bigg Red Ltd

I would think the disc is OK to use for short journeys as the main braking is done with the front brakes. Just try and avoid heavy braking.

I had a similar issue with a rear caliper on the CLK, also shortly after fitting new pads all round. On examination, it appeared that one pad had become 'cocked' in the carrier, preventing pad retraction from the disc. Freeing the pad (big hammer, chisel, long lever), new pads and the caliper was fine.
I suspect the metal backing plate on the pad was on the small side.
Your local motor factor should be able to supply refurbished calipers if required.

May not be the caliper .The rubber flexi hose for that cylinder could be blocked inside , not letting the fluid return , and so keeps the pad in contact with the disc . This is caused by brake hose clamps that the garage use to close them up and also to enable them to work on the brake system without air getting in , and fluid out .But did you push the piston in ? when you replaced the pads . Could you have damaged the piston with the tool .Remove the wheel and the pads .Remove the fluid filler cap on master cylider first Now can you move the pistons in to the caliper ,some have one each side others have two each side . Use a wedge and push the pads so it will take the piston back inside the caliper. You shoould see if they return in to the caliper or not . Looling at the calipers and brake pads again you should find the problem .

Finally got some time to have a look at the rear brakes. Caliper off disc off, looks to me as if the handbrake was stuck on not the caliper. Replaced with a new disc all seems ok for now.

Hi Rob,

Have you used BiggRed for AMG Calipers before? I Rang them up about some C32 Calipers and they said we don’t do AMG. Not sure if it was the person I spoke to not being well informed?

Cheers

^ No Abs, as I said above, not used them but have read of them being recommended. They will refurb AMG calipers same as any others.

Sorry Rog, I must have been half asleep when I wrote that :p had a long day yesterday :)

^ Haha no problem. We've all been there at one time.

I’ve used Bigg Red for rear calipers on S212 (not AMG). First class service. Recommended.

It beggars the question though as to why five year old calipers should become unserviceable through internal corrosion when retracted after a pad change. Who said to me Jags are crappy built?
