Has anyone priced up a rear screen for the coupe W124?

£500+ my friend. If you have windscreen cover you may wish to find some Yoof who can assist with a brick :D:devil:

Must be thinking of a heavy brick if it takes two to lift it..

We use Accrington Nori brick up here. Nori, iron spelt backwards due to someone building the factory chimney got the word mixed up and started iron from the base upwards. Its stuck with the company for nearly 100 years now and is still a trade mark of Accrington Brick. And yes they are heavy :p:devil:

Does screen delamination lead to problems other than cosmetic? Mine has got slightly worse in the 20months of my ownership (car is parked outside).

Any lower?

I think that it can cause problems with the heating elements. A lot depends on if water and freezing weather can open up the laminate with expansion.

I started in the phone directory today with ABC Windscreens and was quoted £350+Vat = £411 or so. This looks like a promising start as Autoglass wanted several times that amount.

£564.71 with 10% discount from Inchcape. The shipping would probably be a killer though...

ABC's price included fitting at either their workshop or my home.

Just thought I'd give you the stealership price for a comparison. If one of them has it in stock then they might be willing to let it go (get rid of it!) for less :)

A good idea. I'll ask.

I've seen people report lower prices, but not often and I don't know where from. I also saw a report of somewhere that could apply a convincing cosmetic fix, but can't recall what that was either. Sorry.

I have seen one wise bird suggest that it is something to put up with, as it rarely goes so bad as to affect the heater elements and its rate of progress often slows down to zero.

It bugs me, but for the time being I'm living with it. It's exactly the sort of weakness that you would have thought that a company like MB would have foreseen and designed out. If I do get it fixed, it will be an OEM part and an independent window fitter recommended by a local bodyshop; on a job that won't take one skilled fitter more than a couple of hours, Autoglass and their ilk make a price mountain out of a cost molehill.

I WONDER IF THEY QUOTED YOU A SALOON REAR SCREEN? I WOULD DEFINITELY DOUBLE CHECK THAT PRICE.

Just got a price for the saloon rear window, also from Inchcape:

Oddly there are three different rear windows.

HEAT-ABSORBING;COMPOUND GLASS : £532.98
HEAT-ABSORBING;SINGLE-SHEET SAFETY GLASS : £266.49

SINGLE-SHEET SAFETY GLASS,CRYSTAL CLEAR : not found.

I assumed it was the first one we wanted prices for.

Pleased to see that you are not tempted to risk a criminal record by defrauding an insurance company and causing increased premiums for everyone else.

I love moral high ground comments like that when there are fraudsters conning people out of hundreds of thousands...

I would be tempted to say that the glass is faulty and if there is delamination this is as much a safety issue as a stone chip or crack... The glass is structurally weakened now.

I would be claiming on insurance for sure.

Bad brakes and bald tyres are a safety issue too - does not mean that you should claim on your insurance.

It is not moral high ground it is not telling lies.

Sorry Jay just re-read what you were suggesting - this would be OK to submit a claim for and see if they pay - that is not being dishonest - but chucking a brick through it and claiming a vandal did it is different.

exactly... thats all im saying... with mine I rang them up, I said my screen has gone white in corners and started to seperate... within 24 hours I had a shiny new screen...

In fairness neither the fitters nor the insurance company seemes bothered about the details of the damage.

The fitters were happy to get their cash and the insurance company didnt as another question.

Although my excess is a lot more as im a trade customer (£250) I think the screen cost them £780 + fitting...

Definatley the CE/Coupe and not the saloon. The guy apologised at it being so expensive and asked if I was sitting down.

Looking at Shudes post #13 maybe toughened glass rather than laminated then? Since the glass is glued in it has a structural function which would be best served by a laminated screen IMHO. I would also be asking the fitters if they have done many of these before since the chances of damaging existing paintwork and trim could be quite high. If the existing screen has delaminated then a new moulded rubber surround strip and possibly new trim strip might be advisable to make a good job. I am not saying this firm won't be OK but in my experience quite often cheap means quick and nasty.
