Just got a 2017 E class 220 d se. oil light comes on saying reduce oil level. happened twice now. only picked it up Friday 18th. I know it has the correct oil level in. any ideas of what to do? is it common for this to happen? should I just ignore it?

If you didn’t buy it private then take it back to the dealership.

If the oil level looks fine, then remove 1/2L of oil just to be sure. Overfilling a Diesel engine isn't a good thing.

Better still, if you bought it from a trader, take it back to them and ask them to sort it out, they probably serviced the car before selling it and slightly over-filled it (easy mistake to make - oil expands when hot).

The other (less likely) possibility is that the oil quantity sensor is faulty.

How do you know it has the correct level?

They told me it was the correct level

Many thanks all, will take it back to MB Hemel where I got it from, ask em to reduce it half a ltr

Just as an afterthought, in your all's experience is there anything else I should be keeping an eye out for on this car of this age

Did the dealer update the maps to the latest version as part of the deal?

If they did not, then depending on the type of infotainment system you have, you may be eligible for a free maps update.

If you have the Audio20 with Garmin Map Pilot navigation on SD-Card, then you will need to purchase an update SD-Card from the dealer for £99.

If you have the COMAND Online NTG5*2 with built-in navigation, then you are entitled to 3 years free maps updates. So depending on when your car was first registered, you may still be eligible for a free update. Otherwise, you'll need to purchase it from the dealer, it's usually £150-200, but on occasion it's available for £99.

Cheers for this Mark, I will check it out. registered in March 2017. it says it has map pilot. but I can command it through the camand system. we shall see. I really only use it for well established things, like hotels/ or general arrears such as Clermont Ferrand just to get me on the right track. I have a Garmin lifetime maps for intricate stuff. it seems that all dealers are just penny pinching on every sale they make irrespective of the brand

If it says 'Map Pilot', then your infotainment system is Audio20, not COMAND Online.

On a general note (not specific to your car's model), check for:

- Rattle from engine after start-up from cold - could indicate loose timing chain.

- Engine not reaching normal operating temperatures quickly (or not at all) - potentially a faulty thermostat

- Any fault codes... though you'll need to invest in an iCarsoft MB V2.0.

- DPF sooth level - again, iCarsoft is needed.
