Remap and EGR delete/removal/blanking

Yes, the EU was the reason, another half baked idea that was forced on manufacturers by politicians who understand very little, it doesn't work very well and owners have to pay through the nose for any repairs down the line.
Delete adblue and EGR and guess what, the car will sail through the MOT with minimal emissions anyway.
Not alot of difference tbh. From 5 to 6 for all the fuss.

Euro 5 emission standards for diesel cars
Carbon monoxide: 0.50g/km
Hydrocarbons + nitrogen oxides: 0.23g/km
Nitrogen oxides: 0.18g/km
Particulate matter: 0.005g/km
Particulate number: 6.0×10 ^11/km

Euro 6 emission standards for diesel cars
Carbon monoxide: 0.50g/km
Hydrocarbons + nitrogen oxides: 0.17g/km
Nitrogen oxides: 0.08g/km
Particulate matter: 0.005g/km
Particulate number: 6.0×10 ^11/km

The reason all that kit went on was to move (heavily polluting) Euro 5 diesels up to Euro 6 levels - in other words up to the standards of petrol engines.

Living in Zone 2 London I can tell you that this has made a huge improvement to air quality both in terms of what I smell every day but also in terms of the stats that back it up - particularly in NOx emissions.

There's a reason for it and it's not just because someone in Brussels though it was a good idea.

I bet most of the taxi's and chauffeur cars have had their adblue deleted.

Most taxi's that run in Portsmouth are not running EGR, cats, DPF or adblue.

Cars in London make next to no difference in polution levels, 99% of it comes from diesel trains, buses, lorries and taxis. And the worst offenders on pollution are planes and shipping. Let's not forget central heating boilers and log burners. Many, many causes but no joined up thinking for a solution.

And this good old UK government allow the import of Chinese cars to pollute our air . Like the omoda 5 for instance
CO₂ emissions 170 g/km . The UK goal for 2021 was 95 g/km . Go figure!!!

CO₂ does not pollute the air you breathe, though... ?

Park in a garage and close the door . Leave the engine running. You'll be fine.

That's CO (Carbon monoxide) poisoning, not CO₂.

CO₂ isnt poisonous and isnt harmful to humans. In an airtight room, the increasing concentration of CO₂ will eventually kill you by suffocation due to lack of oxygen. But in the open air it's impossible to come to harm from breathing CO₂.

Well, for many years I used to cycle 10 miles from NW London to the City and back and I can guarantee you that a Euro 5 diesel car, especially a cold one, can pump out obscene amounts of crap.

I don't have to be on a bike to smell it; when there were loads of Euro 5s around and I had the misfortune to be following one I'd have to be pretty quick with the recirc button before the cabin reeked of diesel soot.

Even just walking down the road on a still day you could smell the honk laid down by one of them for 100 yards or more.

Thankfully, this is mostly a thing of the past and it's not something I ever want to experience again.

For anyone other then the driver or owner (ie most of the population), the Euro 6 kit on modern diesels is a game changer.

The big change was the move from Euro 4 to Euro 5 - that's when DPFs were mandated to stop the soot. The particulate (soot) limits for Euro 5 and 6 are actually the same as each other.

But the nasty nox is massively less....180 mg per km... down to 80...55% reduction.

And of course many Euro 5 Cars met or exceeded Euro 6 spec years before ii came into force.... which is why my Euro 5 W212 is ULEZ friendly.... for now.
