Hello

I have a C200 late '96 with a flip type key.

I have had problems starting the car lately and advised that I may need a new key (I only have one). Apparently these keys have transponders in them that interact with the immobiliser.

I’d appreciate if anyone could tell me more about how these keys work or about the life span of the transponder.

Regards

I think you should actually have 3 keys, two 'flip' ones and a 'credit card' type. My car is missing the latter ... I guess the cost/hassle of getting a replacement would be broadly similar, so I'll keep an eye on this thread!

flip keys cost approx £50, you will need to take a whole load of docs with you to the dealers, they can order using your chassis number.

I bought one recently for my W202 '98 for around £80. It's a different key but can't see why it would be £40 cheaper than yours. Is there a different (cheaper) style you can get?

The newer ones are a lot cheaper, it's as simple as that.

I paid £65 for one last year, mine's a 96 car too. Needed logbook, passport and utilities bill for them to order one. Mines a flip with a single button and IR transmitter.

from local main dealer, Mercedes Manchester Central. standard price as far as I know.

Give them a call 0161 230 4600, they won't be able to mail order you one but they'll give you a quote for one.

Thanks for the update mickl. I just rang the number. They want £100 + vat

you must have a different type of key to mine then.

I suspect it's simply that the prices have gone up.

near 100% price increase.....MB must be on hard times

They've got to pay for all the rust removal somehow ...

Don't think I'll ask about replacing my 'credit card' key.

As usual it's blamed on the value of Euro or some other excuse.

When I had a W210 I had to use the credit card key, because the normal key had flat batteries. Anyway the credit card key didn't work.

Replaced under warranty. ;)
