Lost my keys in Lincoln today. Is a replacement only available from the dealer? I have a spare so can they get the details off it? Any experience of cost?
Feel very angry with myself right now.

Yup. You will need the V5c and it is ordered from Germany. Expect circa £200 I'm afraid...... No way round it neither - lots of posts on here about it

Not sure, but think they disable to one you have lost just in case some scrote finds it

Any idea where you lost it? Worth back tracking where you have been and a visit to your local police station (if you have one)
Put a reward notice in a local 24/7 local shop.
You may just get lucky ;)

Bugger. Not sure how they justify £200 though? Just hope that I don't lose the other key on our Italian trip next fortnight!

Because they can I guess. I understand that other marques can be even more expensive!

BTW, may be worth checking your car insurance for key cover. You may not even know you have it?

Yup, lost them while sitting on a bench on High Bridge, Lincoln. Don't ask how, please. I was just too stupid.
Backtracked but to no avail, and if you know Lincoln you will know the drunks and junkies around High Street so the chances of them being handed in are south of zero.

Good call, renewal was today.

Cant edit my post. This is the extract from the policy. How on earth can anyone establish that someone who finds your lost keys knows where you live?

Section 6: Replacement locks.
If you have comprehensive cover and your keys are lost
or stolen and not recovered we will pay to replace the
keys, ignition, door and boot locks on your car, providing it
can be established that the identity of the address your
car is kept at is known to the thief.

I think the guy is called Mark. Well thought of by those that have reported back.

There are other key programmers available.

I think what they are looking for is someone who puts a tag with the address on their keyring. IMHO you are covered - Result!!1

You'll be lucky to get a replacement key from the main dealers for £200. It's closer to £275 now!
As above, might be cheaper and quicker to drive to RMK in Brum and they'll make you a key on the spot. Or arrange a home visit.

From their website
"
  • If you visit our Workshop - 1 Black Key programmed to the car is £150+VAT
  • If we visit you at your home or work - 1 Key programmed to the car is £180+VAT

My reading of it is the reverse though it’s a peculiar condition. My interpretation is that if there is a risk that the usual location of the car is likely to be known to the potential thief/finder (e.g. keys found outside your house next to the car) you are covered. Lost and picked up by a random individual, not covered.

On re-reading, I agree! Better check my own policy and maybe add a tag to my keyring?

@JHS - may I ask which insurance company?

I’ve got key cover through the RAC, it’s not expensive compared to the cost of a new key. Biggest problem is the availability of some keys such as the Mercedes fold out ones.

No Problem, it is Swinton. Thought that it was a very strange wording.

Further update. RMK cannot do keys for W205. Don't have a reader for them, and not likely to do anything in the future.
So insurance it is.
Bugger x10!

So the key is lost while travelling.
Surely the address the car is at is known until the car can be moved.

If lost while the car is parked at home then the address the car is kept at is immediately obvious, but only if the key is lost in that vicinity. But you lost it, where it was lost is obviously the mystery.

I guess insurance could insist on vehicle recovery as though broken down. Then your problem.

Insurance underwriters agreed to pay. No loss of NCB, no excess to pay. Quite a job convincing the claims handler that all the locks did not need changing!
