Evening

I have bought myself a small 2 seater sports car* and am looking at bringing it up to something approaching concours condition.

It is a solid-red colour (so, hopefully straightforward to paint in the original shade?!).

Can anyone give me a ball-park figure of what I should expect to pay for a decent job? (ie door handles off not just a mask & blow over).

I'm be happy to wait until silly season is over for the paint shops (ie winter).

Cheers

:)

* I am at that funny age according to my wife, who is just grateful that I am buying a sports car and not running off with my secretary...

any clues as to what sort of car we are talking about...

It all depends on preperation needed and how much work you are willing to put in.

The cost on any refurb is mostly down to time taken to strip and prepare car and then put back together. Painting is the easy bit.

Its a Mk1 MR2 (I had one many years ago) and although I would be prepared to do some of the prep work, assume I handed it over untouched.

Cheers

A superb choice Sir!! Which year is it? T-bar or moon roof?

How good is the metalwork? They do have a tendancy to rust - and rust badly. I followed a G-reg today with a hole in the rear valance the size of a mouse mat.

Do budget for replacing the original coachlines, as they're a tell-tale sign of a cheap respray, and the car just looks wrong without them. Also don't be tempted to colour code bits that shouldn't be colour coded, again it just looks wrong.

It would be great to see some pics!!

I know, I know...

The coachlines are back in production and it won't have red door mirrors!!

No rust and most of the suspension has now been powdercoated.

A T-Bar.

Pics only once it has been painted :D

If you haven't already, join the forums.

I used to frequent http://www.mr2dc.com/ but that was not long after the interweb was invented, and online communities evolve, so it may be worth joining a few.

Even back then good Mk1 body panels were great trading chips!!

Nice. So it's a facelift model then? With leather I guess if a UK car.

You tease. Silly season is ages away!! :D

It is a UK car but one of the very few from the brief period before leather became standard (and that is what I wanted - the Toyota interia material is far more durable than leather plus its never too hot or too cold).

MR2 is a similar size to a CRX and my guy does one of them for me for £2k Thats a full respray including door shuts etc, All bonded glass out and refitted, and every panel square and shipshape. I do the stripping prep and when it gets to him it has no door handles, bumpers and any claddings/spoilers are all removed ready for prep.

However this does not include any rust - if he finds it he cuts it out and replaces panels/arches where necessary at extra cost.
He gives it back to me and I just refit the handles/wipers/bumpers etc in an afternoon :)

Its the only place I know I can get a perfect glass like finish that wont deteriorate in a couple of years.

I was quoted £1800 for a complete strip down and respray on the E320 coupe.

Use that as a guide price if you wish.

I can ask what he'd charge you for an MR2 if you wish?

What year is it?

Colour description or is it just signal red?

KJ

Usually for this sort of work I would go to someone via recommendation, or you have seen the guy's work standards.

The costs of a good respray can vary a great deal :)

Thanks for the rapid-fire answers!

I'll budget £2k and be happy with £1.5k.

I doubt it will add to the value of the car, but it will keep me happy. TBH a 1988 car with 27k miles and FTSH is probably a little under-used. I have known both ownersand suspect that by the time it goes for its next service it will be in similar condition to when it had its PDI!

Thanks again.

Just try and be realistic... MR2's dont fetch much even if immaculate nowadays so dont go silly on a car that you may get bored of..

Our Sprinter cost just over £2000 and that was windows out, doors and bonnet off. I'm old fashioned and wanted our vehicle baked. I would definitely go by recommendation. Make sure they have a proper dust free soray booth and bake facility. I don't like seeing a car sprayed in a dusty enviroment and I reckon £2000 tops and anything less than £1200 would not be a good job. Are you intending keeping the exact original colour? I ask because of the engine bay which I was not fussed about with our Sprinter where most of it cannot be seen, but a car is different. If it is not done perfect then to me it is a bodge:o :o Doors, boot, bonnet trim and glass should all be removed. Everything that can come off should come off, but again I am very critical regarding cars.

It will cost more than the car is worth but if your keeping it then so what? :) :)

Good luck

John

Its all in the metalwork and paint prep. Assuming same colour and the bodywork is in good condition - no rust, no dents, then £1.5- 2k for a half decent job using good quality ICI paint.

As soon as metalwork gets involved or surface preparation then time and costs go up.

If they use two-pack, then you can damp floors to reduce dust and don't need an oven. The oven just speeds up the chemical reaction.

If water based they do need an oven but also a high throughput of air blowing through the booth, and this means the booth has to be spotless.

As a quick comparison my father's 944 was resprayed guard's red (original colour) and was a pretty quick job, just masked up and painted. That was £600 and was done in 2002, still looks great!

Apparently, the bill from Hilton for a full respray on my W202 (under warrenty, + 2 new wings) will be £2560.43 - although MB Hertford have outsourced their bodyshop work to them, so they get a 40% discount on the labour....
