Folks,

Please help if you can.

My car has been running well with a new MAF for a few weeks. The previous one appeared to fail gradually and the replacement I fitted brought the car back to its usual stunning performance.

I filled up with diesel the other night and a few miles later the car started running erratically - misfiring etc.

The next morning when I started the car it emitted a large plume of white smoke from the exhaust pipe and was idling very roughly. It eventually smoothed off and ran better but the rev limit has been kicking back in at 2500 rpm again.

There are no warning lights or error codes showing on the dash.

Upon cold-starting the car seems to run normally. As soon as the engine heats up a bit the revs are limited, gear changes happen at lower revs and generally the performance stinks.

Has the new MAF failed? Is there any way of bench-testing them easily?

Cheers

Jim

Take a look at the new maf and see if it's been contaminated with oil, was the old one oily when you removed it?

Could be bad fuel, could you make enquiries to find out if other motorists suffered problems after filling up?

Thanks very much for reading and replying.

The old MAF wasn't oily when I removed it.

I'll have a bash at cleaning the new one and see how it goes.

If it doesn't work, can the MAF be tested? What should be my next step?

Thanks again!

Jim

Hi, If the new maf isnt contaminated with oil then i would not try cleaning it as there is a chance you will do more harm than good.

Might be an idea to check if the fuel filter is partially blocked due to contaminated diesel fuel?

Sounds like you may have a dodgy injector. The first step is to see if you have any fault codes then a injector test. All can be done with a star and a leak off test kit.

Are you sure you didn't fill it with PETROL?? The symptoms are exactly right for wrong fuel.

I did this to a diesel car about 10 years ago - never again!

Although that doesn't preclude Tesco from doing it on my behalf...

Thanks to you all for the suggestions. I'll try them out :)

Remove the fuel filler cap and Smell the tank that will tell you.;)

Looks like the maf has died.

I found a cheap replacement, dropped it in and bszoom we have a rocket car once again.

Thanks for your help team!
