Robert-Kubica out of 2011 Season

Bad news. He has great talent and it would be a shame for the future of F1 to lose him. Hope he makes a full recovery.

Definitely out for the start of the 2011 season, its possible his F1 career is in jeopardy

Gutted if he doesn't make it back during the season.

Hopefully he mends well.

Yeah I hope he recovers quickly, doubt he will be able to drive this season.

Interestingly, Bruno Senna is the reserve driver... Senna in a black/gold Lotus Renault again? ;)

My partner is a Plastic Surgeon, and based on what information and desciptions from the press:
(Quote)
"The surgeons are trying to restore the functions of his right hand," Morelli said. "They have already revascularized the limb (re-connected the blood supply) and repaired the bone structure (Smashed bones to require pins and plates).
"Now they have to think about the muscular functions (as the nerves and tissue are damaged beyond repair) but Robert has strong character and he will make it."

What this means is that the blood supply was cut off and the hand therefore had become detached from blood, nerve and tissue supply. Basically if it was me or you, it would have been amputated to be that bad. She expects, based on this information the best he could now hope for is basic function. Even picking things up could be an issue.

Basically about a zero chance to drive an F1 car again, never mind a normal car. I hope we are wrong and the press are reporting it wrong, but it does not sound good.

Terrible news for him.

Sad news. I hope he makes a quick recovery.

He's one of the few no nonsense drivers who seems to put driving before celebrity, so for that plus his obvious driving tallent I hope he's back in a F1 car ASAP.

The aftermath! Speculation that Armco may have played a part?

Ugh....looks like the Armco might have penetrated the car end-on?

Something similar happened to mate of mine - he hit the rear of a truck trailer side on and the bar at the rear of the trailer made it's way in to cabin and made a right mess of his leg....

Hope RK has a speedy and full revovery.

According to reports I read that's exactly what happened, Armco through the floor and into his leg. Not sure how that has led to the hand injury though.

Remember McRae offering to have his finger amputated just because it might improve his chances of recovering/driving when he stuffed the Focus? I'm sure Robert will be doing everything he can to get back in an F1 car but it doesn't sound good.

A shame for sure. An undoubted talent at the wheel, but with injuries that bad it could be the end of his F1 career. I hope not, but F1 cars aren't getting any easier to drive - adjustable on-the-fly rear wing becoming one more control to require manual dexterity.
I wish him well in his recovery.

The normall hand injury in Rallying is where the drivers window gives out completely and a hand flails loose going out side of the widow and trapping it against the car either in a roll or against street furniture. However the window on RB's car looks intact :dk: unless his hand went through the vent flap which would be very unlucky and highly unlikely :dk:. I guess all will be revealed in the course of time.

That's basically what made me ask the question. I find it strange that it is his hand which seems to have come off worst when it sounds like he is really lucky not to have lost his leg.

All I can think of is the armco came through the floor carried on and impacted somewhere in the wrist area caausing the hand injury :dk: Also can't understand if the armco came through the floor why there is no protection, the undergaurd on My Scooby goes under the engine to the B pillar area and protects against intrusions through the floor, which to be fair are normally trees?

I recall Alessandro Nannini suffering a serious trauma to his right arm in a helicopter crash which ended his F1 career, though he was still able to race in touring cars. With all the extra gadgets not least flappy paddle gearboxes, it's difficult to see what can reasonably be expected :(

It does look on the video as if there is some metalwork intruding in the centre of the cabin. Difficult to tell what it is though.

If you look at his seat, top part has a slice straight through it also. Not sure if it was cause by armco or the rescuers.
