Rough Idle When in Traffic

I don't use my car very often (I've done 110 miles this month) and have just discovered a potential problem.

My car (CLK55 AMG 2000) when sitting it traffic for long periods of time, starts to idle roughly then sometimes stalls. It will re-start straight away and be fine. I have narrowed it down to when the temp gets to approx 100 or thereabouts.

Is it possible that the electric fan is kicking in causing this or is it likely to be something else.

If I put in N and rev a bit rough idling clears.

As stated, I haven't done many miles so I'm not sure how much of an issue this will be when in traffic for a long time as I haven't been in any particularly

It happens once, I then clear traffic and its ok. I did sit in 40 mins traffic a couple of weeks ago and it was ok?)

It doesn't do it every time only now and again. (I've had the car since Nov and it has done it 3 times)

I have warranty that covers MAF, electronic ignition etc(Parts and replacement not diagnosis) although the warranty states failure not due to wear and tear????

Any ideas on what this could be or should I wait a bit to see if it gets worse then take it for investigation/warranty claim.

The car really needs to go on a star machine to be diagnosed properly.

It could be a number of things the MAF,a coil pack or lead.

Willow, you are right, a Star Machine will no doubt diagnose the problem, my question is, does anyone have or had any similar problems with there cars/other cars they may have fixed which would help me get an idea of what the problem might be and whether I should get it looked at straight away or hang on to see if it clears/gets worse. As stated, it only happens when car gets hotter when sitting in traffic, the rest of the time it is fine.

i have a star machine myself!!!!

it is still sorth getting it stuck on a star machine as it may sort itself out or may get worse but if you can sort of pin point where the problem may lie it would give you any idea of costs if the warranty you have doesnt pay for it as it is "wear and tear"

You have a Star..Where in Middx are u? I too am Middx(Enfield) if you r close, any chance you could 'hook it up':D

does it occur if you accelerate hard? I had the same problem at tick over but it also occurred on mine if I floored it. Mine turned out to be the MAF.

Do you mean after you had accelerated hard and then was stopped? Mine did this yesterday... IE accel hard then when at next lights got a bit rough.. pulled away normally then was ok again...

Yes thats how mine started, but I had to turn the ignition off/on to stop the rough idle.

Well it sounds the same as mine, I had a MAF go on another car I owned and it seems like the same thing. I'll give the warranty co a call to see if they will cover replacement..It says its covered but in the back is says no 'wear and tear ', not sure a MAF can go on those terms but I think a claim will be in order...Cheers

Euro car parts sell Bosch ones for around £150, don't bother with the cheap ones.
