Hi

Have an S reg (1998) C250 TD estate and have noticed an uneven rubbing sound (similar sound to front disc rubbing against discs pads) when turning left or going around left hand corners. No similar noises when going straight or turning right.

Has anyone else had similar problems and if so any ideas on what it might be?

cheers

Yep, have it when turning right at slow speeds and with quite a bit of lock.

Asked dealer to check it, as I couldn't see anything rubbing, and got the usual "they all do that, sir"...

I was thinking either the servo pump, or that something is in fact rubbing.

Nothing to do with the mud flaps is it?

Will let you know after the weekend !!

I have noticed this on my 1998 W202. Only recently started happening and only noticed the noise when turning left. I am having the wheels off aat the weekend and will have a look. Will update you on Monday if I find anything.

I was thinking maybe there is something stuck between the brake disc and the disc sheild ?

rubbing noise - update

As promised checked the car at the weekend. No sign of any problems !. Had both front wheels off and checked discs, pads, disc shields...Everything. Not even any sign of any rubbing on inner wheel arches, etc.

Any help from anyone else would be appreciated !!

Mudflaps??

Not on a C43!

I am still inclined to think that it is the servo pump, that for some strange reason makes the sound on right turns, but also suspect the inner fender, which I find can be moved around (the part towards the front bumper).

Would be interesting to put the front end on a jack, so that the wheels could be turned freely from side to side, while spinning, although lifting it from the ground would change the geometry.

Rubbing sound - Update

Just spoeken to my local stealership and explained the problem. Guy on the phone was very helpful and said it is either, the wheel bearing (i doubt that). The brake discs (they were new 10,000 miles ago) or the tyre moving slightly on the rim. He suggested deflating the tyre completly (so it breaks the bead) and reinflate. He says this is a common fault and it normally results in a tyre change if the above fails to work. I will try it, if it doesn't work I am due for a tyre change at the end of the year.

On the wheel bearing idea, I would assume that if it was a bearing, the noise would occur at whatever the wheel position? Is that correct ?

If the wheel bearing was loose, it may make more noise when you turn the wheel due to the play.

Update

Recently had new tyres fitted and the rubbing sound has now disappeared.

However my windscreen wiper motor/mechnism is now playing up - repair costs are scary

cheers for all the replies

the sound is to do with the steering geometry, put your wheels on full lock, get out of the car and you will see the wheel is angled as well as turned

at low speeds this causes the leading edge of the tyres to 'shuffle' as they roll

worse when tyres are cold

even worse when they are worn

this condition also contributes to uneven tyre wear on the outside of the tyre if you do a lot of city driving (although not the only cause)
