The guidance in the manual is:
- Drive at varying vehicle speeds and engine speeds for the first 1,500 km
- Avoid overstraining the vehicle during this period, e.g. driving at full throttle
- Try to avoid depressing the accelerator pedal beyond the point of resistance (kickdown)
- The shift ranges 3, 2 or 1 should only be engaged when driving slowly, e.g. when driving in mountainous terrain
- After 1500 km, you may gradually accelerate the vehicle to full road and engine speeds
So, pretty much drive normally!
I picked up my new E350CDI from Sindelfingen and was told that it would be fine to enjoy the derestricted autobahn sections on my drive to Trier, which therefore was accomplished at a variety of speeds, including some sustained 100mph cruising and a couple of stints at around 125-130mph.
You need to avoid babying a new diesel engine too much as you can glaze the bores and rings and it will burn oil forever more. Don't be afraid to use the torque at lower rev's. At 20k miles my W212 uses not a drop of oil between annual services, so I must have got that bit right
