Runaway from Runway tyres.

Had a little spin this morning. No offs or anything just a bit of tail wagging:eek:

Tyres at correct inflation. 6mm tread. Wet road, (persisting down all night here) mini roundabout. Every one else proceeding in an orderly manner at less than 30MPH. Perhaps I was the only one with RWD in the traffic. However the Runways are off today and replaced with something else.

I once bought a car with these fitted, they got binned within 5 miles and replaced with tyres that actually had grip.

terrible things

Chinese manufacture (GITI TIRE {CHINA} Investment Company Ltd) reputed to make excellent tyres. I note that they were established in 1993 and this fact may hold some clues. The technology for manufacturing tires may not have changed much in the past few decades but the research into rubber compounds and the various mixes of rubber in a single tyre certainly has changed.

Wet weather is bound to decrease the friction between the tyre and the road surface. It is not outside the bounds of reason that any tyre which built for a long life may be a rather unyielding compound and that makes it more likely to lose its grip when crossing wet surfaces. I grew up driving RWD and I like driving the Merc for that feature alone... it always feels more sure-footed than a FWD car, to my mind and I think it makes more engineering sense to push rather than pull something along. I would like to think that it makes no appreciable difference to the propensity to loose traction, save where you are heavy on the go pedal... in which case you can power on through the corners to bring the tail around. :D

In truth, you get what you pay for and I see great value in paying a bit more for the rubber between you and the road.

As my old Dad used to say "It doesn't matter if you drive a £500 hack or a £100k Ferrari, it's still only four bags of rubber holding you on the road".

Don't skimp on tyres is basically what I took out of that. I did it once when I had a Saab 9-5 Estate Michelin's on the front some mid market new tyres on the back. Imagine my surprise in a FWD car when the back end started sliding going around a roundabout! Needless to say the mid markets tyres were replaced very quickly. I've never p1ssed about with cheap tyres since, I buy the best I can afford so in a couple of weeks it'll be OM Conti 3's going on the back of mine.:D:D

The problem with tyres is that if you remove the brand name they all look much alike. Even the tread patterns on budget tyres can look sporty. So when Joe Bloggs is offered a budget tyre for a 1/3 less than a premium brand he takes the deal.

oh dear, glad youv'e got rid of them, should have had some fun, did some dougnuts and then dashed them in the skip!

Total cr@p they are! We fitted them to a works Mondeo and not only did the grip reduce and tyre noise increase but the mpg actually dropped by about 4 - 5 mpg! Replaced with Continentals and all was well again!

i have had these on my front and they are totally rubbish, both in dry and wet condition, AVOID!!

I always buy Michelin for car and van they seem to last forever and the PS series has been brilliant in the wet. Super value at Costco with the 20% discount coupon. I searched for a price for Michelin PS3's for my E-class and couldn't get below £576. Costco charged £404 all inclusive.

I suppose it depends on how long one intends to keep a car before shelling out on preium tyres though but pence-per-mile the Michelins will be hard to beat.

When I bought my E-class it had two SAVA tyres and two FULLRUN tyres all of which had excellent tread depth. I suspect that the tyres were fitted to get the car through the MOT. Hovercraft style handling and regular viewing of the orange triangle in the wet. Should be rebranded as Ditchfinder Generals IMHO.

if anyone has a spare costco voucher, please let me know. I will need 4 19" PS2 for my Boxster soon (usual price for good tyre place: £1100).

If I get a voucher through I'll let you know. We usually get 2 or 3 per year.

I'm not sure if the PS2's are still available, but in any case the PS3's are better, especially in the wet.

would be most grateful if you get a voucher and can let me have it.

PS3s are not replacements for PS2. Pilot Super Sport is the replacement for PS2.

Yes, if I get a voucher I'll let you know. You may have to join Costco on our membership if not already a member, although I suppose I coulld post my card to you.

As to which tyre replace which, it all gets a little confusing when you read articles such as this one? LINK.

Thanks!

I have mates who are Costco members, yet never get the tyre vouchers. Hopefully, they can use the voucher with me present.

Just read up on the Pilot Super Sport, very favourable and similar price to the PS2 and 3's

I didn't like the Continentals that were fitted on my car from the factory - back tyres lasted 11000 miles!!! I changed to Bridgestone RE050 all round which were brilliant in the dry, ok in the wet and awful in the snow (now discontinued.) They lasted 20000 miles on the rear.

I'm now running Vredestein Sessanta on the back and they are epic! Wet weather grip is the best I have ever experienced, dry grip is excellent and road noise is no worse than the factory tyres. I can't fault them - and these are classed as an entry level premium tyre. Of all the tyres I've ever had on all of the cars I've owned these are my favourite and about £80 a pair cheaper than Conti's.

What are these Costco vouchers you speak of? We are Executive Members and spend £12-£15k a year there and I don't recall ever seeing a 20% off tyre voucher.

They send them in the post to members a few times a year. Should have details of various special offers, including tyres from time to time AFAIK.

As Will says, we get them several times a year (I think that they may be in the book of vouchers that come in the post from time-to-time) but I've only actually needed the vouchers once and have thrown some away after they have expired.

I Had runways fitted to a 330 Coupe, they came on an alloy package off the bay and I have to admit I was actually shocked at how good they were.

225 35 18's.......total price...... £56!
