Wax or oil based rust preventatives definately will protect your car.
There is no rust under my car on the protected body. The subframe had some surface rust but that is now done as well.

The problem on MB cars is that the paint doesn't properly cover the edges of the metal so an extra coating will work wonders.

I do not wish to disagree with Dieselman but some of the rust problems were due to a large batch of poor quality metal (with W210s being the main unfortunate recipients) The price quoted on ebay seems to me prohibitive. Used engine oil particularily from a diesel car will work every bit as well. I have also found the Bilt Hamber products to be effective.

Sorry to disagree but "the wrong metal" is and always has been a red herring.

By the very nature of how steel is made impuraties are removed as slag from the top of the crucible. AFAIK most cars are made with about 75% recycled steel in the steel. What do you think happens to all the scrap cars in the world?

Without doubt the problem with MB cars and corrosion is down to poor cutting of the steel and subsequent poor paint protection which is why they corrode at the sharp edges, not in the centre of panels par se. All mild steel will corrode if exposed to the elements.

How interesting it should be the company Rustmaster selling the Waxoyl. I had been reading their website and they claim they DIY application is no good. Ha Ha.

The waxoyl-pro they talk about is normal waxoyl with a UV dye so coverage can be checked.

As far as DIY goes, as in most things it's all down to the operator and method of application. The Waxoyl pump sprayers are nearly a waste of time, you need a compressor and proper application gun and nozzles.

Has anyone had any experiance of this type of rust proofing? Is it worth it on a W210 or are the rust issues so deep seated that they can not be stopped?

Thanks

Peter <= loving his car but confused by rust!

I've posted some pics of bits of a certain 210 sprayed with rustproofing agent here.

It's as simple as this. If the air and water cant get to the steel it won't rust.

I referred to poor quality metal, not wrong metal. Iron leaving the blast furnace contains 4 to 4.5% carbon and other impurities. Steelmaking is about refining iron and reducing carbon content among other things. Have you ever wondered why British steel commands a premium price on the world markets? Are you aware that the price of British steel has risen sharply in the past few years and why this has happened? The answer comes back to good quality steel and poor quality stuff. My info about the poor quality steel used for a period by MB came from a senior MB executive.

But the majority of steel used in car bodies is mild steel, with small percetages being in high strength steel for rigidity.

British steel is expensive because like most British manufacturing products are expensive. This is no reflection of quality.

All metals and in particular steel has rocketed in value worldwide. This is nothing to do with local variations but is due to the Chinese economy soaking up worldwide resources.

An MB spokesman MAY have said it was due to poor steel but that is a smokescreen to divert attention away from saying the build quality of MB cars was CR*P. It was a lesser evil to blame a supplier. If it was the steel why has it affected ALL MB cars for soooo long, even ones built in different parts of the world.
The problem is obvious to anyone who looks at their car, the edges are unpainted.
If the steel was poor why do replacement panels fitted by the dealer not rust?

Can anyone recommend a place in the south west who will do a good job of an all over waxoyl?

Or the North?
