After seeing some old posts re this I thought I'd check my '98 E300Td. I've had it 6mths & was slightly disappointed with performance from standstill. Sure enough the box was permanently in W mode. After taking off the trim I was able to prise the switch out of it's housing, careful there's a small spring underneath! Under this was a small black plunger that had jammed down. A small pair of pointed pliars to pull it out, a quick clean to remove the crap & hey presto a working switch again. The only awkward part was trying to re-assemble the switch & the small spring with the detent ball. However I found that if you're careful, you can remove the rocker switch from it's housing, then refit the housing to it's home, position the spring in the housing with the ball facing towards where the rocker switch will go, then carefully push the rocker switch back into position. Push the trim back & job done! A quick test & what a difference.
This has probably been written up before - if so ignore I'm just so pleased at the difference it's made to driveability, especially around town where there's a lot of stop start.
