I've just driven over 300 miles today and for the last 100 miles or so the MPG has shown 39.9mpg despite varied driving. Is this the limit for the OBC? The only time I've ever seen 40mpg is on start-up. It's not stuck as it dropped to 39.2 for the last bit of town driving

No. 47mpg was the highest I ever saw (150mile slowish but moving motorway trip) on my old e320 cdi.

Mine usually shows a bit over 40mpg on longer trips. I think 44mpg is the highest I've yet seen.

If this is the "from start" reading, it's averaging over the whole journey. The further you drive, the less variable it will be.

My 320cdi V6 is the same as it appears to count down at the start of the day from 40mpg. I appear to be averaging 33/34mpg- but I do have a heavy foot. Interestingly I did do an old man trip with a light foot trying to keep the revs below 1500 and over 30 miles and it still only gave a reading of 38mpg, so for the small saving in fuel I'd rather enjoy it.
