Hi
I was driving my S500 today pulled up at a junction and when I set off the car was very slow to pick up. Also when it did change gear it did so with a clunk. All gear changes were very jerky The E and S settings still change the way the gearbox works and the box will kickdown. On hills the box drops a gear and revs up,changes back up and then back down again. The car picks up speed very slowly. Its a bit like a slipping clutch on a manual
I managed to get the car home and I will get the RAC to take it to a garage.
Has the torque converter gone if it has do they normaly just go without warning.
I assume this is going to empty my wallet

oh dear - sound vey much like what happened to mine.

a total gearbox re-build cost me 1200 quid

i assume that you have a good few miles on the clock - being a S 500 coupe not a CL 500 and you have e/s gearbox (cheaper to re-build than mine...) - so its about a 1992/4?

try at least getting the fluid changed (and gearbox filter) by someone who knaows what they are doing in your area (i would say geoge fraser in W london, but thats a bit far :p )

Yes it is a 95 with the E/S gearbox with 86000 on the clock.
I have not had any problems with the car at all during the 7000 miles i have driven. It was working fine earlier in the journey, no warning about what was about to happen.

mine went funny - i bought the car on the thursday, drove to courcheval in France on the fiday, drove back the next week and it 'went' around paris..

the next week, when pulling up to a set of lights it wouldnt move, rev it, and it suddenly went into gear and drove off. took severla seconds to engage gears, felt like it was 'slipping' etc etc.

86k miles is about right to change the oil if i were you

Pick the car up on saturday its had an exchange gearbox and a new torque converter I have to pay £300 for the torque converter the rest is under warranty. Provided the car works OK I think I got of lightly with £300
