Good evening, i am looking at purchasing a Mercedes Benz S500 on a Y plate. its got 88k on the clock and to be honest im after some advice. what are the common problems with these cars?

The car comes with a full dealership service history and it seems all the toys you could ever want in a car. the price is about right for the age/mileage etc engine and auto box are smooth. I hope you can help me out here, because i really dont want to part with my hard earned cash on what could potentially be a dog of a car.

thanks in advance for your replies

Paul.

Hi paul, have you tried using the search facilty on this forum?,(there have been previous threads relating to your post),there are current/previous owners of the car model you are looking at & i'm sure they will be able to help you more than me.all i can say for sure in case you don't already know is that it won't be a cheap car to run/maintain,good luck:thumb:

You will get to know the lady behind the counter at your petrol station VERY well.

Rust
Suspension can have worn bits
Potential for issues with Airmatic
Electrical gremlins

Tyres aren't too cheap. It's got 16 spark plugs and will use 8 litres of oil per change.

That aside, they are truly fantastic cars. I love mine.

Thanks Guys :) only planning on doing 2000 miles a year so shouldnt be too bad to run, have been warned about the rust issues, i need to go over the car again to check i hear the rear arches suffer wit it badly.

Get the dealer to let you have what has been done to the car. The other common fault with the 220 is the gear lever sticking in gear £ 500 - £ 600 to replace.

Arches, all four. Bottom of door sills, boot lid and roof (front by wind screen) All check the cats are not rattling.

Air suspension legs and pumps can have a short life, make sure they are working.
I have a couple of times recently seen a W220 driving with collapsed front suspension.

cheers for all the advice, i pick up the car monday.

Prepare for bigger bills (much bigger actually) than your Corsa.

these are just the pics off Autotrader. think i got a bargain for the car tbh.

Looks good, put a set of face lift rear lenses on and it will look even better and i think you can now change the the front lights to the clear face lift lights.
