S500L w220 transmission code P0705 limp mode

Hello

I recently bought this Lovely s500L w220 which was supposed to be working perfectly. Unfortunately it’s starting going into limp mode all the time so won’t go pasts 2nd gear. I’ve looked on the net and seen it’s quite a common electrical fault.

I called the seller and he said to fiddle with the wire Infront of the sensor where gear stick gear stick which has worked a few times but rarely

Now the only way I can do it is buy deleting the code with my cheap odb scanner and after a few tries she runs beautifully

Has anyone had similar issues who can give me some advice thanks

Even a private seller can’t sell a car with existing faults without telling you . Maybe worth a conversation about him fixing it ?
 
They can.....but they have to tell you if you ask if it had any known faults....if you don't ask they don't have to say. Caveat emptor....and all that.

I've read all the information online about the plug that connects to the transmission and I've checked mine and it was full of oil. I will change the plug and seals. Im having trouble finding the tcu where the oil apparently wicks up too so I check for oil there . is it in the right hand side fuse box in engine bay or in the passenger footwell under glove box. My car is the w220 s500L right hand drive

The p07050 code indicates it should be the shifter. other people say its the conductor plate. The thing is when I delete the code the car drives perfectly and shifts perfectly for hours when it goes back to limp mode then the digital display which shows the gear goes blank or freezes

Is there anyone near london that can help me Indentify the issue

When I call a garage they say new shifter or new conductor plate and cant even guarantee it will fix the issue

You could do with an MB specialist buddy , what does “near” London mean , where are you based ?

I know the issue. I had something similar on my 2001 W220 S500L back in 2008. We ended up replacing the conductor plate with a refurbished unit but that's not to say that it's the solution to your problem. The garage I used back then was the one behind the Esso garage in Garratt Lane behind the Wimbledon Dogs stadium. Long gone.

If it's any help, this isn't a rocket science problem. Someone familiar with the kit should diagnose and resolve it quickly.

The two independents I can suggest are Alexanders in Twickenham. 020 8898 5656. Talk to Ben. Only taken over this year by Nigel, a Mercedes specialist, ex-MB Weybridge, but they know their stuff and have all the kit. They're pragmatic, helpful over the phone, and sensible in their pricing

PCS in Horndean are fabulous, but they're (an easy) 50 miles away down the A3. Recommended but I doubt you're in the mood for an hour's drive. Talk to Natasha and Ollie on 023 9257 0123. Again, pragmatic, helpful over the phone, and sensible in their pricing.

(Cough) Don't bother with Bradshaw Webb. They're awash with corporate and wealthy 1st or 2nd owner work. Not the people to be used for older kit.

Your conductor plate plug is probably leaking and oil is traveling up the wires to the TCM. See if you can inspect it and if so get it cleaned up and replace the plug which is cheap. Good luck

I've been trying to find the TCU to check it for oil

from the threads online its supposed to be in the right hand side fuse box under the bonnet. although ive seen one video where they are saying its under the glove box footwell. I will post a photo of mine maybe you can let me know which box is the tcu. Bearing in mind my car is a right hand drive if that makes any difference

I'm not sure if they moved things around on a RHD car, but on the left had drive, it's supposed to be in the passenger side footwell. You can also run into problems with leaves blocking drain plugs in the cowl that could get it and other components wet.

Well I think I found it in the left side fuse box of engine bay

the connectors were full of oil and when I opened the tcu there was about a shot glass or more of oil

I sprayed and cleaned it with electric circuit cleaner the plugs too. unfortunately hasn't seemed to have fixed the problem

The car drove fine for about an hour then back to limp mode. and intermittently screen indicating gear going blank

I still need to change the plug and seals that leaks from transmission and clean that too

I need to check the transmission oil level too

I forgot to mention all this started after the car go stuck in park and the plastic piece in shifter was changed for aluminium part

There is a brake light out too which can be a cause of car getting stuck in park in the first place
