..under the bonnet.

Err, I did not pop the bonnet when I bought the ML a couple of weeks ago (possibly slightly hungover at the time:crazy: ).

There are salt (i've tasted it) deposits around the entire edge of the sound deadening felt. Dealer has seen the car and suggests steaming it off.

I think that wouldbe waste of time and the deadining felt will be a bit like a weetabix once it has been steamed and dried out by a warm engine.

Am not sure how the stuff actually got there in the first place - I cannot believe is from the road - the only thing was thinking was if the car had been taken an extensive skiing holiday and driven on lots of salted roads.

I have no idea whether salt is used in southern Europe or not. I somehow doubt it.

Any clues?

You know those photo-shoots for TV and the mags. where they zoom around on the beach, splashing through the water ...

Hopefully this isn't what happened to your ML?!

Er..we need to open a new forum sub-section "salt damaged MB's"
I think the spray comes in from the front when following someone on the motorway.
Even in the middle of summer I used to find spray was salt laden, you can taste it on your lips if using an open faced helmet.
The one thing I can't explain is why the alloy MB use for their engine components fur up on the surface (white deposits) much quicker than some other makes ?

You bought a car without looking under the bonnet ? Braver than me .....

I noticed this on the 530 when i was cleaning the engine bay at the weekend.

I just wiped it off with a damp cloth , i put it down to crud from the road.

No Howard, not braver - just a bit stupid. Was in a hurry, main dealer car one owner low miles... I may have just lifted the lid and looked at the engine (why I don't know....).

I might just go mad and take some pics for future reference / in the hope that someone may be able to fathom out just how the saline got there in the first place.

This practice of tasting unusual deposits on your vehicle...

I've got a strange collection of items around the inside of my wheelarch? Would you be able to have a lick of them and let me know what they are?

:D

Hope your issue can be resolved easily, best of luck! :)
