Err, I did not pop the bonnet when I bought the ML a couple of weeks ago (possibly slightly hungover at the time ).
There are salt (i've tasted it) deposits around the entire edge of the sound deadening felt. Dealer has seen the car and suggests steaming it off.
I think that wouldbe waste of time and the deadining felt will be a bit like a weetabix once it has been steamed and dried out by a warm engine.
Am not sure how the stuff actually got there in the first place - I cannot believe is from the road - the only thing was thinking was if the car had been taken an extensive skiing holiday and driven on lots of salted roads.
I have no idea whether salt is used in southern Europe or not. I somehow doubt it.
