Living up in Caithness where after a day or 2, you get to know every road like the back of your hand, made it all the more exciting when I recently had to go to Glasgow on business.

I entered my destination into my recently fitted comand and off we went. Everything was going great until we left the M8. Then, it all went t**s up. Its the first time i had given it a serious test and it failed.

The latest comand disc and it had no clue which roads where one way and ones were not.

I have to say, i was very disappointed. Just when the the thing could have been very useful, it turned out to be fundamentally flawed :(

Hi et069,
I drive around Glasgow all the time and have NEVER had any probs.
I personally think it's as good as the TOM TOM(In wife's car:) )

What Vession DVD are you using?

Regards,

Alex

I find the Comand in my ML excellent. I have used it extensively here and around europe and the only problem I have had is when it took me the wrong way round Bordeaux, it went the long way whereas I would have gone a shorter route but other than that it's great.

Ye huv the Sassenach model obviously, disnae speak Glesga an disnae unnerstaun the road signs................................

Where abouts? New roads possibly?

Can't say i need sat nav in glasgow :) but ive never had any problems anywhere ive been including the UK, europe and the US , all mappings been spot on.

I agree with the one-way issue, sat at lights in Henley earlier in the year merrily signalling left only to find the road COMAND wanted me to take had clearly been one-way for some time. Cue knowing nods from local pedestrians, "Bet he's driving on sat-nav".

(Not helped by half of the alternative routes being dug up at the time either! )

Most of the time though I've learnt to trust her.

You aint driven in nothing till driving in boston! They were doing the big dig here and the roads changed every day and when i mean changed, Directions , one way systems etc etc , all under building work! no daylight and just generally nuts.

Finger in the air stuff and best endevours! Funny how i always ended up going over that toll bridge some way or another lol! Grrr

You should try Reading or Oxford, especially if your maps are a bit out of date.

Near where I live is an unmade road that could double as a tank testing track. All SatNavs show as just another road.

Only make that mistake once.

I wonder whether issues like this could sometimes be the result of Satnavs being set to 'shortest route' rather than 'fastest route'. Either as a default, or by the owner??

Or are these tracks etc. wrongly marked as major roads?!

I've got a TomTom Go 300...getting long in the tooth. Can't update it though as it hates Macs. It normally works fine, but those odd occasions where it lets you down really makes you want to hoss it out of the window!

"At the next roundabout turn left" ..ok

"Turn left"....ok

"Turn around when possible" .aaaaaaaaargggggggghhhh

Welcome to the wonderful world according to Sat Nav. Who knows the vaguaries of the little sat nav box - but they certainly land you in it from time to time:D :D :D

Once you realise that satnav map releases generally happen only ever so often - maybe every two years - and roads especially one way systems - are changing all the time - there are always going to be problems. In Prato, Italy, the satnav's version of the one way system would have caused an accident so I just turned off the auto-recalculate and used it as an ordinary map. In Barcelona, Spain the wrteched thing lost satellite coverage and threw a fit within 2km of a hotel I'd never been to - so again I made it up as I went along and it recovered after a few minutes and was okay. If you think satnav is bad, you can try my better half's map reading abilities and believe me, satnav with all its niggles is much better.

Watch it:devil: The blokes are just as useless :D ;)

OK be honest - (most) Men don't do details and (most) Women don't do maps...........

SO

I think the female voice was a ploy to get over a less than perfect sat nav - cos no one really expects a female to be telling the right way anyway! Clever quality control really, and a way to avoid litigation.

I've yet to find a COMAND unit that has anything other than a female voice.

The Teleatlas (CD) disks are updated twice per year so should be reasonably up to date. The newer DVD updates are infrequent. Last year there were three updates in quick succession!

Yes I tried the male voice...but it didn't seem right. However the female voice is more relaxing. She's not very chatty though. A bit stand-offish.

I have the latest version 8. I must admit, getting around Glasgow isnt too difficult, but i thought id give the satnav a run in and there were a good 6 or 7 streets that it tried taking me the wrong way down a one way street.

Still, to give it some credit, it did recalculate my route each time and i got there in the end.

i just put a sat nav command unit into my Clk 208 and it just tells me "reading Error",any ideas, or any body got a none copy Travel Pilot DX CD Disc for sale.

Alfie can you say, please, when the next update is coming (or has there just been one) for the satnav in my 2005 S320cdi. My current version is from July 2006. What is the best price for the updated discs? Last time I had to go to dealer to flash in the new DVD (is that the right way to describe what they do). If I buy from a non-dealer, will they still flash it in or whatever it is they do. Obviously it is free if you buy the disc from them but it is very dear.
