We've all seen them at night. Satnav stuck smack bang in the middle of the windscreen, creating a lovely blind spot. Usually on a nice bright 'daylight' colour scheme too. I was driving along last night and passed 4 or 5 cars like this in the space of 10 mins.

Wonder if the Police ever pull them over for it :dk:

I thought an EU band was on the way for these, I believe it already is forbidden at my place but police does not seem to be interested, they just watch after minor speeding. The same with fog lights at conditions where those are not supposed to be allowed.

Best place for sat nav is low down on the right by the A piller. This way it doesnt obscure anything.

I believe you are not allowed to attach any device anywhere on your windscreen in California now.

Had a PDA Sat Nav on right by A pillar once. Stopped at Hopwood Services, while my daughter was a baby. I took her in to change nappy, and some scrought opened the drivers door and nicked pda.

I had not removed it as my partner had stayed in the car - he even had the cheek to say sorry love I'm having that before he left at speed.

Middle of the windscreen is at least a little safer in this respect, although I find all of these devices too bright, even in night mode.

Just to clarify, I'm talking about having the satnav high up on the screen ... face height or thereabouts.

I've seen a few up there in the middle of the windscreen or stuck directly beneath the RVM. Still not safe IMHO!

I see the same people, day after day obviously on their commute to work with SatNav smack in the middle of their screen.

I assume they know where they work, so is it just a status symbol now? Not sure how that works either; "My car's not good enough to have one built in!"?

I use a Brodit ProClip for my iPhone (with TomTom), sits very nicely over the central air vent.

I saw one ML with a sat nav attached to the windscreen, below the rear view mirror, almost in the middle of the free (vertical) space there. At least someone in the middle seat at the rear can have a good sat nav view.

I see these every day on my way to and from work in the rush hour. I really find it hard to believe that people either don't know where they're going, or that they've gone to the trouble of switching it on, programming it and sticking it to the screen for the same old drive.

Someone did mention once that his had built in camera detector, which is handy, although on the daily crawl to work and back, probably not of much use. My observation is that its generally young lads in the 106/Saxo/Clio/Polo type of thing - boy toy i suppose. I agree about it probably being blinding once it gets dark though. It will be another thing that gets banned soon, and then ignored by everyone who has one.

I wonder where on earth these people are going in order to need satnav. Fair enough in far off cities, but some travel the length of the motorway with it illuminating the inside of their car like a tropical fish tank!!

1. Traffic info

2. In case they have exit unexpectedly and follow an alternative route

3. It gives an updated ETA

4. Saves stopping and setting it up when you come off the m'way and need it to get to your final destination.

I found that my Garmin sat neatly inside the ashtray holder (ashtray removed) of the W210. If I need to get directions, I just listen to it :)

Agreed.... I had heard the California thing but couln't find anything anywhere that confirmed it, so last year just stuck it in the usual place by the A Pillar. Didn't get nicked..... by the cops or the druggies... :D

Quite interesting when a chip in the wiper swept area will result in a MOT fail for a LGV.

VOSA take a dim view of anything on the screen execpt tax, operator disc, and speed limiter sticker in our area.
