I am 15 and have my restricted licence in New Zealand, I recently went for a long drive to get out of the disfunctional household of mine and i found myself being folowed for 1 hr by an undercover cop on the motorway. The scary thing is that I was exceeding the speed limit of 100Km/h by 20km/h. My car is a 1973 Mercedes 230 and the speedo is in Mph so for those who dont kno 60Mph = 100Km/h. When i got pulled over i was surprised to find that i was not issued a ticket but instead complimented in my classical car by a cop wearing a Mercedes-Benz logo on his collar! :bannana:

You can drive legally at 15 in NZ !!!! ??? What is a 'restricted' licence ? I wonder if that is the youngest age a licence can be attained in the world ? Never thought about it before .

What is it like for getting insurance at that age ?

Now, there's an idea! :thumb:
I agree - but I think it would be very difficult to make everyone happy and alas I think it would be a huge vote loser.

I can't imagine any UK government would be brave enough to introduce it.

A pity really.

Isn't 3rd party included within the RFL? Comprehensive is extra.

TBH, I'm not sure! I'm going to NZ in October and the car hire companies all say that full insurance cover is a must 'as many drivers are not insured'. But I suppose they would say that, wouldn't they?

And if they did you bet your bottom dollar that the insurance companies would see it as a way to extract extra profits..by not reducing their policies by the full 3rd party costs......

But I do agree it is an interesting idea

Been getting a few quotes lately for a particular reason and have found that 3rd party only quotes are often higher than fully comp... odd that, must reckon if you don't care enough to cover your own car you must not care enough about anyone elses....

I have often wondered why the road tax isn't added to the price of fuel.

You wouldn't (unless you drive-off) be able to avoid the duty and you would pay in-line with the amount of miles you travel.

Oh, and if you forgot to "tax" the car you wouldn't be fined of towed away, you'd just run out of fuel.

That said, I don't know if the road tax AND insurance included in the price of the fuel would be workable.

Stop trying to inject common sense into government. :wallbash: :wallbash: :wallbash:

that's because fuel is already so heavily taxed .. any more and it would be embarrassing.

best get more money using another tax ...

Many years ago I lived next door to a four-car family. The Guy a trucker, Daughter used the bus, sons spent money on other things and car shared IF they could afford it.

Total miles say, around 8,000 per year for 4 cars.
Total car tax for household approximately £600.00

I had one car 25-30,000 miles per year.
Total car tax for household approximately £150.00

It was unfair, but I wasn't complaining. ;)

Restricted means i can drive by myself and take no passengers or i will incur a $400 fine, umm i get it after i have my learners for 6 months. Insurance is alright its $300 NZD a year plus an excess of $1200
