Hello people. Rather than taking the old girl down to my local Merc dealer [who I do not like] thought I would cast my line here to see if I can get any bites. With this problem I'm heading pretty much towards the power steering pump being the culprit. Auxiliary belt changed twice, new belt tensioner and both idler wheels. Power steering fluid changed [it was bad] and yes had the same symptoms with the old fluid. I've ruled out alternator pulley/clutch as the sound is defo from PS area.

There is also a loud knock sometimes from the O/S front when very slowly moving in reverse on full right lock., which I think might be inner track rod knuckle as everything else is recently new but did not know if it might have any relation to the PS issue?

Have a video with sound of symptoms but cant upload here.

Thoughts please?

Thanks

If you Jack the front wheels up does it still make the same noise with the pressure off ?

From what I remember I tried the jack up and no it didn't make the noise. So pressure off the PS would indicate PS Pump? Will do again to confirm. Thanks for your reply.

You dont quite have the hang of this youtube stuff yet do you! Change it from private to public.

Well that squeaking is the belt power steering pump loading up on full lock and putting a strain on the belt......but lots of cars do that without losing steering assistance. You have almost eliminated/replaced everything except the pump. Is the steering rack dry and free from leaks?

Yes, no leaks at rack so pretty much confirms what I was thinking. Looks like a new pump on the way. Must admit for quite a while I have been suspicious the steering was fractionally too heavy.

I'd definitely get it checked out by someone who knows about steering etc (not just rely on opinion of some random bloke on a forum who's not actually seen the car so can't be sure he's right!) before replacing it! I'm sure a decent PS pump won't be that cheap.
