Quick question on gearbox.....My car moves smoothly into gear on the flat, but I have a sloping drive, probably 10 to 15 deg. Every morning I put my foot on brake grit my teeth and move the gear lever into reverse....then 'thump' its in reverse.....is this normal?...is it because I'm parked on the slope? Should I start reverse parking on drive...putting me in the bushes!

Cheers

I wouldn't have thought it's a fault as such, just taking up slack in the drive train. As you say you're on a slope so it must be related to the way it's happening. It can't be doing it much good though.

I actually thought it was recommended in the highway code to drive out onto a road rather than reverse out. I certainly tend to reverse into my drive as the norm and you've got nowt to lose trying it ?

I park on a fair slope also and my method is to apply the hand(foot) brake while the car is in neutral, then put it into park. When I start up and move it into R, no clonk as it's not under any stress.

Cheers,

Will give it a go, I usually pull on as I live on corner, by the time I stop and look to reverse there's usually a car behind me.....interestingly in the name of H&S we have to reverse park at work....anyone not doing so gets reported!
I have reverse parked numerous times and I'm sure it doe not thump into drive.

Will definitely give that a go it worries me when it clonks into reverse!

Thanks
