Can anybody tell me how the rear suspension on my '98 W210 adapts itself to differing loads? I'm assuming there's some kind of electric pump somewhere to pump up the shock-absorbers.

I'm asking this because when we went away over Easter & I hooked up the caravan the rear dropped over 1" but didn't seem to raise after starting the engine & didn't improve after 120mls.

I was thinking that if there was an electric pump I could remove the fuse, reattach the caravan & see if the rear sank even lower!

Any thoughts guys.

Thanks

Col

If the self levelling suspension is anything like my previous car, 1986 190E (W201) then the hydraulic oil pump is driven mechanically by the engine. In the case of my previous car I think it was driven directly by the cam-shaft. Have you checked that you have enough hydraulic oil in the suspension system? There should be a reservoir with a little dip stick attached to the cap.

*EDIT* Also check the rear struts for any sign of leaking around the O rings as this will also cause the rear to sit low.
